Inman's boyfriend, catching wind that Sophia was the studio's director, swaggered over with a drink in hand, trying to schmooze. Sophia wasn't fond of his slick demeanor and quickly excused herself from the private room.
She washed her face in the restroom and then ordered a drink, settling in front of the railing to watch the dance floor below.
The noise was deafening, and Sophia didn’t hear someone calling her name until they were right behind her, asking, "Sophia, is that you?"
She turned around, surprised, and then recognized the girl standing there.
It was Anna, Robin’s assistant, someone Sophia had encountered a few times during visits to see Robin. They were acquainted.
"It is you!" Anna said, approaching with a smile. "Long time no see. Haven't spotted you at the company visiting President Hester lately!"
Sophia offered a polite smile in return but remained silent.
Anna continued, "The company just landed a huge deal, and President Hester invited us out to celebrate. Should I let President Hester know you're here?"
"No, thanks!" Sophia quickly declined. "I’m here with some colleagues anyway, and we're about to leave."
Reading the room, Anna cautiously sat down beside her and asked, "Sophia, did you and President Hester break up?"
Sophia nodded, "Yes."
"That explains it!" Anna muttered to herself.
"What do you mean?" Sophia inquired.
Anna's face twisted into a sneer, "No wonder Diana has been marching into President Hester's office more boldly these days. People in her department say she’s been acting like she owns the place. So that's the situation."
After finishing, Anna probed further, "Did you and President Hester break up because of her?"
Robin's expression darkened, "Do I disgust you that much?"
Sophia, defiant, retorted, "Our breakup has nothing to do with Jason. Don't twist the truth and blame others for your mistakes!"
Robin sneered, "Sophia, are you and he really innocent? You let him into your room freely, didn't guard your secrets from him, trusted him more than me. And yet, you hate how close Diana and I have become. Have you considered my feelings seeing how close you two are?"
Sophia, taken aback, stared at him, her mind foggy from the alcohol.
Under Robin's intense scrutiny, Sophia stepped back, "So that's your excuse for cheating with Diana?"
Robin looked away, regretful, "That was my mistake, and I've always admitted it without making excuses."
Sophia's face flushed with anger, "Regardless of what you think, before we broke up, my relationship with Jason was transparent. I would've told you everything about our childhood and been honest about my relationship with him. And now, the very things I confided in you are being used against me!"
