Chapter 297 It’s My fault, Don’t Cry
Evelyn rubbed her shoulders and arms. When Madam Lloyd
saw this, she took the dumplings aside and said, “All the work
is done. You can leave now.”
“It’s okay. I’ll cook the dumplings. You’ve been busy all
afternoon, so you can go outside and have a rest…” As Evelyn spoke, she was about to get a spoon.
Madam Lloyd avoided her hand and said stiffly, “Ms. Shelton, you don’t have to be so polite. This is Huston’s house, and you are the guest. You should rest.”
She directly pushed Evelyn’s position far away with one
sentence, which showed her attitude. Evelyn was an
unfamiliar ‘guest’ to them.
Evelyn took a deep breath and tried to calm herself down,
constantly reminding herself to stay calm and not rush.
“You’re overthinking. I just wanted to help.”
“No need.” Madam Lloyd scrutinized her with a glance. “I know what you’re implying. We have a firm stance. You do not
need to try to persuade or soften us. None of those efforts will
work.”
Evelyn frowned slightly. “I don’t want to change your opinion
of me. I know that these things won’t change easily. I can
understand your opinion of me, but I don’t have any ulterior motives. I just want to help.”
“Ha.” Madam Lloyd sneered and scoffed at her words.
“Everyone knows how to say nice things. Ms. Shelton, if you are sensible, you should take the initiative to withdraw after
seeing our attitude. Don’t have anything to do with Huston and delay his future.”
The more the old lady spoke, the more excited she became.
Her words carried a sharper tone, and her stance was resolute. She expressed her thoughts without holding back, showing no mercy in conveying her perspective to Evelyn.
Evelyn closed her eyes, swallowed, and said in a low and weak
voice, “I don’t want to delay him.”
“But the outsiders will talk about it. Maybe it’s just as Huston
said, you’re not a bad woman, but in the eyes of us elders, you
have a marriage history after all. What will outsiders think of you if they know?”
Evelyn was speechless and didn’t know what to say.
The two stood in a deadlock, and the atmosphere became
very heavy. Madam Lloyd sighed and said, “All right, you can leave now.”
After that, she turned around and went to the counter to deal with the work at hand. She didn’t look at Evelyn again.
Evelyn wiped her hands and walked out of the kitchen slowly. When she went upstairs, she happened to see Huston coming down from the study. The two of them looked at each other, and before they could speak, her eyes were already red.
