But he didn't expose her lie directly. He responded in a low voice, "Alright, I understand. Take care of yourself."
"You too."
Bert would rather she tell him directly than be deceived by her. But what could he do? She chose this approach, and he had no standing to intervene forcefully. He could only silently support her decision.
"Don't worry about Lucas. I'm handling it."
"Okay," After responding, Evelyn remembered what he had said earlier about targeting Huston's company. She hesitated for a moment and added, "He seems to be more open now. Don't be too aggressive for now."
After saying this, she clearly felt the man beside her freeze for a moment.
She didn't want to say it, but she had no choice given what he had done before.
Bert didn't know how to describe his feelings after hearing that. It was a mix of various emotions, all tangled together. Finally, he simply said, "Alright, I'll listen to you."
As long as she was happy, his time wouldn't be wasted in vain.
Before hanging up the phone, Bert called out to her, "Evelyn."
She paused, "What is it?"
"Remember, whenever it is, I'm on your side." He spoke each word with strength and conviction, creating a sense of reliability.
Evelyn was deeply moved and felt guilty for her deception and concealment. She lowered her voice and said, "Bert, take care of yourself too."
