The lively chatter in the room suddenly went cold. Faces around the room turned sour.
Raul looked upset, "You're leaving right after New Year's? So you won't even be here for your birthday?"
Turning twenty is a big deal. He'd been planning to throw Flora an extravagant birthday bash. But the medical institute was a fortress, only the elite families from Lone Island had occasional access. Seeing Flora, let alone celebrating with her, seemed impossible.
Flora felt stuck. Who knew the training schedule would get bumped up like this?
Henrik tried to cheer Raul up, "Dad, don't worry. We can head to Lone Island and celebrate her birthday there."
Raul, still downhearted, couldn't even muster an appetite.
"Miss, you're leaving already?" Cecelia was sad to see her go. The young lady had just come back, and now she was off again. Who knew when she'd return?
"Miss, I heard the institute's pretty strict, and they barely let anyone out," Cecelia said with a touch of sympathy. "Once you're there, take care of yourself. We'll be waiting for you!"
Flora sighed, those words reminded her of something she'd heard before.
Raul, clearly unhappy, went to bed early. Henrik and Cecelia followed suit.
In the living room, it was just Flora and Connor now.
Connor hadn't said a word since Flora mentioned leaving early, and it was clear he wasn't thrilled.
Flora snuggled up closer, wrapping her arms around his neck, "Connor, don't be upset, okay? It's not like I wanted to leave early. Is it really fair to be mad at me?"
