The rules of the competition were pretty simple: the first one to break through their opponent's firewall and hack into their computer would win. The person whose computer got hacked would have to drop out of the game.
When the official match kicked off, it was a five-on-five showdown. If you lost, you were out, but if you won, you could help your teammates hack into the other team's computers. Teamwork was crucial. Not only did you have to guard your own computer, but you also had to lend a hand to your teammates whenever you could. After all, no matter how good you were alone, you couldn't take on five people by yourself.
Brianna had her eyes on Flora from the get-go. She kept hammering away at Flora's defenses, tossing traps and vulnerabilities her way. But while Brianna was all fire and fury, Flora was the picture of calm. She leaned on one hand, her other hand casually tapping at the keyboard, looking almost bored.
Instead of going for Brianna's computer, Flora focused on defending her own, even ignoring the weaknesses Brianna intentionally left exposed. This only made Brianna angrier. She yelled at Flora, "What's your deal? You're acting like a scared little kid. If you're too chicken to compete, just forfeit!"
Brianna had never felt this frustrated in all her matches. She'd tried everything, used every trick she knew, but she couldn't crack Flora's defenses. It drove her nuts.
Flora, cool as a cucumber, shot back, "Why would I forfeit? Ever heard of strategy?"
Strategy! To Brianna, it was just cowardice. She laughed bitterly, "Just wait! I'll make you beg for mercy!"
