Throughout the rest of the night, Eli and I had various conversations about anything and everything. The conversations flowed with him smoothly and at a constant pace. It was nice having someone to talk to about things other than my family for a change.
He left at around 4 AM since we both had work, and after taking a small nap, I began getting ready for work. I dreaded speaking to my boss because I knew she was going to be overly concerned and ask questions that I wouldn’t want to answer. She was just like that.
Miranda locked eyes with me as soon as I stepped into the school building and sped over to me with that large smile of hers. It always irked me how wide it was, skin stretched a little too much for it to be considered natural. And then that one time she got botox and it all seemed so much worse.
“Hi, darling!” she greeted me in a sickly sweet voice. “We missed you yesterday! Luckily we had someone who could sub for your class, so no worries. You always leave such detailed notes so the sub did excellent.”
I smiled back, ignoring the urge to reach out and touch her face…
“Ah, that’s great! I’m so sorry for the inconvenience. I was just really out of it yesterday and I figured it’d be best for everyone if I stayed home so as to not ruin anyone’s day.”
“That’s just fine,” she replied. “You know we’re always here for you no matter what. Do you mind if I ask for a favor?”
Oh, no.
“I don’t mind, of course! What is it?”
“Well, do you think you’re able to take home a little extra paperwork? It’s just that a lot of the teachers here don’t get an extra day off, so the extra work would be extremely taxing for them.”
Ugh, I mentally groaned. It wasn’t an extra day off. I physically couldn’t get out of bed to shower or brush my teeth, much less come to work. Whatever, though.
“Of course. That’s perfectly fine. Email me what needs to be done.”
Her grin somehow widened. “You’re the best, Aisha! I’ll see you later, alright? I’ve got to go check in on the other teachers.”
I rolled my eyes once she was out of sight and walked into my classroom. I love working with kids, but honestly, this is not how I wanted to help them. I wanted to do something I love, and although I loved teaching kids and I enjoyed it, it always ruined my mood when I realized that this is the dream job I wanted. I would be working here for the rest of my life.
I sat down at my desk realizing I had about 30 minutes before class would start. I opened my desktop computer and went to my email, seeing that Miranda had already emailed me the work earlier today. As I was typing away, I heard my phone go off. Without giving it a second glance, I put it on silent since I needed, or wanted, to focus.
But I kept forgetting that even if it’s on silent, it makes some noise from vibrating. I’ll check it after I finish typing this document, I think as I continue typing. After I finished the last document, the kids started coming into the classroom. Thank God I finished it before they all came back. I quickly emailed the documents back to Miranda and went to greet the kids.
