The part Joshua hadn’t brought himself to share yet was the darkest of all. Sue had met a brutal end, her throat slashed in a scene too horrific to describe. Her father, who had been battling illness for ages, was also a casualty of the mastermind's sinister plan, and they didn’t stop there—Greg, the hitman, and his elderly mother were taken out too.
Joshua had witnessed enough darkness in his line of work to handle this grim reality. But Allie wasn't cut from the same cloth. With her naturally kind heart and boundless empathy, news like this would surely make her lose her appetite. After all, Sue’s father and Greg’s mom were innocent victims in this twisted plot.
Joshua drew Allison close, resting his chin in the nook of her neck. He took a deep breath and let his tension melt away. "Allie, there’s been so much going on lately. I’ve been wound up tight, constantly on edge. It’s only with you that I find any peace."
He held her close, eyes closed, "Allie, you’ve got to stay safe too. I’m worried they might come after you next. I’ll be adding two more bodyguards to keep an eye on you. Don’t forget to have them with you whenever you step out."
Allison snuggled against Joshua, her voice muffled as she agreed. A wave of unease swept over her. "Joshua, do you have any idea who could be behind this? Who could be so cruel?"
Joshua thought for a moment before speaking, "There are no solid leads yet, but we’ll find answers soon. People leave traces when they act. I reported it to the cops last night, and they’re on it."
Allison’s eyes dropped, weighed down by her thoughts. After a pause, she said quietly, "Shawn showed up last night."
Joshua’s arms tightened around her. "What did he want?"
