Girl Get Rid Of That Jerk (Williams and Shawn) novel Chapter 220

Despite his high status and influence, Ray approached Javier with such kindness and humility that it left Javier feeling both honored and a bit overwhelmed.

Javier propped himself up on the edge of the bed, leaning back against the headboard, his face a mix of surprise and unease. "Ray, you’re too kind. I'm really okay. I appreciate you coming all this way."

Ben chimed in, "We've brought a little something from the Fisher family. We hope you'll accept it."

Then, he handed Javier a debit card.

Thanks to Ray’s friendly demeanor, Javier found it tough to hold onto any grievances he might have had against the Fisher family. He smiled and took the card. "Thank you, I appreciate it."

"Javier," Ray continued, seeing that Javier had accepted their gesture, "there’s actually another reason I returned to Oak Lake."

Javier had a sense of what Ray was about to bring up, so he composed himself and listened closely.

"Your injury wasn’t an accident," Ray said, "and I’m sure you know that. Joshua might have mentioned Ben’s…"

Ray paused, wanting to say "illegitimate son," but stopped himself, realizing how harsh it sounded.

"Ben’s other son, Chris," he finally said.

Javier’s expression darkened slightly as he nodded.

"Chris’s target is us," Ray explained, "and you’ve been caught up in this because of Allie’s engagement with Joshua. After much consideration, we’ve decided to call off the engagement."

Linda, standing nearby, was a bit taken aback by this news.

Javier had talked to her just last night about the decision to end the engagement with the Fisher family, but he hadn’t dared to bring it up due to Ray’s influence. Unexpectedly, Ray had come to their doorstep today to cancel the engagement himself.

This was something their family was hesitant to initiate, so having the Fisher family propose it was a relief.

From the moment Ray and his family walked in, Javier had mentally prepared himself for this. Hearing Ray’s words, he wasn’t particularly surprised.

He nodded slightly, "Since you’ve brought it up, I’ll be honest. I’ve been thinking the same. Please don’t blame me. So far, we have paid a steep price for this engagement."
