Kate woke up one morning, all excited to dive into her social media and see the online storm against Allison. She was expecting to find her followers tearing into Allison, but after scrolling for what felt like ages, there was nothing. No buzz, no trending posts, nada.
Confused, she switched over to TikTok only to find a shocking surprise: her account had been permanently banned! What on earth?
Panicking, she grabbed her phone to call Shawn for help, only to see several missed calls from him. She quickly called him back.
“Hey, Shawn, I—” she began, but he cut her off, his voice sharp with anger.
“Kate! Do you even get what you’ve done?” Shawn was seething. “You went online and spread those lies about Allison being a homewrecker? Seriously? You know better, right?”
Kate was floored. “I…”
Shawn didn't hold back. “Allison’s law firm has already sent you a cease and desist letter. You're on your own with this one. I’m not getting involved.”
With that, he hung up, leaving Kate in a daze.
A legal notice? What was happening? She quickly checked online again and spotted the legal notice from Allison's law firm. They were planning to sue her for defamation!
In a panic, Kate googled the consequences of defamation and felt her stomach drop. Defamation was serious business—it could even mean jail time. If Allison’s firm won, and the court ruled against her, she could end up behind bars. She couldn't just sit and wait for that to happen...
...
Later, as the workday began, Allison called the police to check on the rescue plan for Lizzy. The officer on duty told her the case was complicated, and coming up with a rescue plan wasn’t straightforward. They asked her to hang tight and promised to keep her updated.
Allison hung up, feeling deflated. Soon enough, it was Monday, and she was back at the law firm, taking care of business. The firm was still new, and as the boss, she had to stay on top of things.
A couple of hours into her work, the receptionist knocked on her door.
“Come in.”
The receptionist popped her head in. “Allison, someone’s here to see you.”
