Chapter 79
Allison handed her purse to Kate with a cheeky grin. “Here you go, search away if you want.”
Kate paused, caught off guard by Allison’s easygoing attitude. Could Allison have already figured out her plan and removed the bracelet beforehand? She looked up at Allison, who was wearing a mysterious little smile that was hard to read. There was something about it that made Kate uneasy.
As she handed the bag over, Kate couldn’t shake the feeling that Allison had set her up. She was still lost in thought when Cindy suddenly grabbed the bag, unzipped it, and dumped everything onto the floor. Out tumbled the Van Cleef & Arpels blue agate bracelet.
Cindy snatched it up, her voice sharp as a knife. “Still gonna say you didn’t steal it? What’s this then? I bet that you stole this Chanel purse of yours too!”
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Kate felt a wave of relief when she saw the bracelet fall out. She’d slipped it in through the small gaps in the bag’s zipper earlier, and thankfully, Allison hadn’t noticed.
Just as Kate was about to capitalize on her moment, the crowd suddenly parted. Zack stepped forward, a slight frown on his face. “What’s all this talk of stealing?” he asked.
Was someone trying to pull a fast one on the Hartley family? Were they out of their minds?
“Mr. Hartley, it’s her!” Kate pointed angrily at Allison. “She took my bracelet. You have to help me!”
Zack followed Kate’s finger and met Allison’s gaze. She waved at him, her eyes sparkling with amusement. “Hey, Zack.”
The murmurs in the crowd died instantly, leaving an awkward silence hanging in the air.
After a beat, Allison broke the tension. She pointed at the bracelet in Cindy’s hand, pretending to be annoyed. “Zack, they’re saying I stole that bracelet and even searched my bag. Do you really think I’d waste my time on something so cheap?”
Kate’s face went pale, and she stumbled back, stunned. “You’re… you’re Mr. Hartley’s cousin?”
Shawn, trailing behind Zack, had a moment when his brain just blanked out. The gift box he held slipped from his hands, and a pink diamond necklace clattered to the floor. His vision swam, and he could barely keep his
balance.
Allison chatted on with Zack, but Shawn couldn’t make out a single word. It was like the world had gone silent around him, leaving him in a daze.
Cindy looked like she’d seen a ghost. “No way! How can you be Mr. Hartley’s cousin? You’re supposed to be the housekeeper’s daughter!”
Allison sat back on the sofa, crossed her legs, and rested her chin on her hand, a playful smile on her face. “Sorry to burst your bubble.”
Zack finally pieced everything together. Allison was the supposed thief! His expression turned icy. “Who do you think you are, coming into my house and accusing Allie of theft? Got a death wish?”
“N–no, Mr. Hartley, please… let me explain…” Kate stammered.
But Zack cut her off with a dismissive wave. “Out. Now!”
