Debra quickly thought on her feet. "If you don't believe me, you can ask Harland. It's my first time here. I was just trying to find the restroom, but this place is enormous. Could you tell me where it is?"
The mention of Harland made the guard hesitate. He lowered the walkie-talkie, glancing back at Debra, who looked genuinely lost. He pointed ahead. "It's right ahead on the left."
"Thank you," Debra said, her eyes lingering on the elevator door.
If she didn't gather some information tonight, she might miss her chance. She made a quick decision and turned back to the guard.
"Oh, by the way, you mentioned something about swiping a card earlier. Does this elevator need a special card to use?"
The guard shot her a sideways glance. "Only VIPs with a gold card can go upstairs. No card, no entry."
Feigning curiosity, Debra asked, "What's upstairs? Is it fun? Can I get one from Harland?"
The guard's demeanor softened. "I can't say for sure, but you could ask him if you're interested."
Debra smiled again, maintaining her charm. "Thanks. I'll ask him later."
As she walked away, she spotted Harland around the corner, searching for her. She steadied her nerves and approached him, feigning innocence. "Harland, is everything okay?"
"Ms. Frazier, where have you been?" Harland Bruce asked, flustered. "I've been looking for you."
