EVA.
"Baby. " The voice echoes around me and a groan leave my lips as I turn my head to the side, only for it to come again. "Eva. " My chest drops and I slowly open my eyes to see him hovering over me with a smile on his face.
"Hey, babe. " He grins at me, lifting his hand to my face to tuck a strand of my hair away and I shake my head, struggling to believe the sight of him. "You're here. How can you be here?"
"I'm here for you, baby. " He whispers, leaning forward to brush his lips against my temple and the familiar shudder rushes through my body. A breath of relief leaves my lips as I speak, "You're here. You're really here. You're here with me. "
"That's right, Eva; I'll always be here with you. " He responds and a small smile graces my lips as I raise my hand and let it cover his. "I can feel you. You're here. "
"I'm here. " He repeats, and I hum. "Kiss me. "
"You need to go back to sleep, baby. " He says instead and I shake my head, "No, I don't want to. I want you to kiss me. I want to taste your lips. Kiss me, Emerson. "
Once again, he disagrees. "No, Eva. You need to go back to sleep. I want you to close your eyes and have your rest. "
"But I want you to—" he interrupts me, "Shh, baby. Close your eyes. "
"No, I can't. I can't do that. " I stammer and he says, "You need to close your eyes, baby. "
"I can't, " I choke on my words. "I— I can't. Please, don't make me close them. Don't make me look away. You'll leave. You'll leave me again if I close them; please don't make me do that. "
"You want me to stay?" He asks and I nod my head twice. "I do. Please stay with me. Don't leave. Don't make me close my eyes. Stay right by my side as you've always done. Don't make me go through that again; it hurts. It hurts so much. "
"I'm not leaving you, baby. I just need you to close your eyes. "
"No. No, please. " A whimper leaves my lips as tears burn my eyes and he says, "Close your eyes, Eva. "
"No, please. " I insist, turning my head sideways to prove my opposition to the words. "I don't want to. Please. I—"
"Eva! Eva, open your eyes!"
"No, I need to keep them—"
"Goddamn it! Eva, open your eyes!" The voice is different. It isn't soothing like his. It doesn't bring relief, and it doesn't lessen the pain. This voice isn't Emerson's.
Emerson is..." Emerson? Emerson, please. "
"What's wrong with her?" There's another voice. Loud and alarmed.
"I don't know. I woke up to her like this, and she isn't opening her eyes. "
Open my eyes? No, I don't want to keep them closed. I can't lose—
"Eva. Baby, open your eyes. Eva, please. " No. No, please, don't ask me to–
"Eva!" I jump out of bed, darkness covering my vision before it starts to fade and the first sight I'm welcomed with is Aliya holding onto my hand with tears rolling down her cheeks.
"Eva, oh God!" She calls out when her eyes meet mine and wrap an arm around my neck, bringing me into her chest. "You got me so scared. I thought something was—" the rest of her words come out as short pants as she pulls back and cups my face in her hands, wiping the skin with her thumb before she presses my head against her chest again. "I'm so glad you're fine. You got me so worried. "
I raise my head from her shoulder and stare ahead of us to see my mom standing in front of the bed with tears in her eyes and dad by my side.
Emerson. He wasn't here. He was never here. It was all a fucking dream; one that'll never make it to reality?
Aliya withdraws from the hug with concern masking her expression. "Are you okay?"
"Baby, I— oh my God. " Mom rushes to my side, proceeding to grab my hand and I jerk my hand away from the burn of her touch, to hold onto Aliya.
Silence swims around me before her voice comes again. "Eva, I—"
"Please, leave. " My voice sounds foreign to my ears as the words leave my mouth and there's another silence.
"Princess, we're just worried about you. You can't keep us away from—" I interrupt his words and lift my head to where Dad stands. "You too. The both of you. I want you to leave. "
"Eva, please—" mom tries again and I snap my head to her side. "Don't make something far terrible happen before you give into my request, mom. I want you out of my room. Leave, please. "
Her tears don't stop and she swipes her hand across her cheek as she rises to her feet, "Okay. We'll leave if you want us to, but we'll be back. Please take care of her for me, Aliya. "
I don't hear Aliya's response as they both walk out of the room, leaving me with her and she turns back to me when their frames disappear out of sight.
"Are you okay?" She asks and I shake my head. "He was here. "
"He?" She raises a brow and I nod. "Emerson. He was here. He was in my dream; he was tormenting me. Giving me the familiarity of his touch; false hope; false relief; false happiness. Why? Why would he do that to me? How could he make it hurt like that?"
"I'm so sorry, babe. " She mumbles, wrapping her arms around me and I shut my eyes as my head falls against her shoulder and my arms reach around her. "Why'd he do that? It hurts so much, Aliya. It hurts so fucking much. I don't like it hurting like this; I feel like I'm going fucking insane. "
"Shhh, Eva. You'll be fine. I promise you. I'll stay right here with you, and you'll be fine. " She assures me as she gives gentle pats on my back, but that doesn't stop my tears from falling, nor does it stop the burn in my heart.
