Rose’s phone buzzed with a text, cutting through the haze of her restless thoughts.
She picked it up and saw a message from the bank—her paycheck and commission for the past six months had just hit her account.
Out of reflex, she opened the banking app to check Ethan’s account too. Then it hit her—she had deleted his accounts. They were over.
Why was I even thinking about sending him money? What am I doing? That’d be pathetic.
What she needed to do was the opposite—now that Ethan had been paid, it was time to make sure he paid her back.
Since she no longer had any of his contact info, Rose searched her memory and pulled up his alt account on Instagram.
She typed beneath a recent post, her tone ice-cold.
"Ethan, your paycheck just came through. Isn’t it time you paid me back?"
It didn’t take long for Ethan to see the message. And now the comment thread was blowing up with curious onlookers.
"What’s going on?"
"Why isn’t he paying her back?"
"Wow, it must be serious if she’s calling him out here."
Some commenters started speculating.
"Looks like relationship drama to me—check the profile pics."
"Bet the guy borrowed a ton of money and ghosted her after the breakup."
"Or maybe she paid for everything and he ghosted her."
Ethan’s face burned with embarrassment as he scrolled through the comments. Furious, he messaged Rose. "What are you doing posting that here?"
Rose answered calmly. "I don’t have your number anymore. But I remembered your Instagram."
Ethan stayed silent—no promise to pay, no refusal either.
Rose’s patience ran thin. "Ethan, I’m done waiting. Now that you’ve got your paycheck, pay up—or I’ll post this on your main account too."
Ethan stared at her message, torn. It was the biggest check he’d gotten so far—and now he had to give it up. "You’re ruthless."
Rose fired back. "Ruthless? Please. Don’t forget—I used my first paycheck on you."
Ethan fell silent.
Just then, she heard heavy footsteps on the stairs. Startled, she shut her eyes and pretended to be asleep. Why am I hiding? Why can’t I face Houston after what I overheard?
Rose’s heart twisted painfully. How can he be this gentle when he still loves someone else?
