Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) novel Chapter 379

Chapter 380

Beatrice was smug as hell when she said, “You wanna know? Why not ask Alyssa? Let her spill the beans.”

Then she sidled up to Agnes, “Agnes, you gotta get to the bottom of this. Don’t let me down. Your mom might have been wrongly accused and she’s probably still restless. Remember this when you and Jared are happy.”

Upon seeing Agnes’s frosty demeanor, a gleeful smirk crossed Beatrice’s face. She exited the lounge triumphantly, leaving a pale and shaken Agnes behind. The thought that Beatrice’s insinuations might be true terrified Agnes, but she was determined to uncover the truth.

That evening. Mamie extended a dinner invitation to Agnes, who declined gracefully. Mamie’s preference for upscale private dining establishments often came with exorbitant price tags, typically in the four-figure range. While Mamie always footed the bill, Agnes felt uncomfortable after several such outings, especially given her lack of appetite that day.

Instead, after her day’s work, Agnes headed to a quaint alley nearby. One of the dwindling historical streets in downtown that remained untouched by modern development, it was home to several authentic local eateries. She had chanced upon these gems on a prior occasion, with one in particular serving mouthwatering beef burgers. Ever since her arrival in S City, Agnes had made it a habit to frequent this spot nearly daily.

After a while, she got to know the owner. When she walked in, he greeted her with a smile, “Back again, are ya? The usual beef burger?”

Agnes nodded, “Add more chili, the spicier the better”

“Too much chili is bad for your stomach. Maybe you should cut back a bit.”

Everyone called him Albert. He was always dressed in grey, with a noticeable scar at the comer of his eye. But it had faded over the years, and when he smiles, it just looked like a wrinkle, making him look kind and even a bit elegant.

Albert was a good looking guy. You could tell he must’ve been a real heartbreaker when he was younger. Agnes always thought he looked familiar. Then it hit her He looked like a famous movie star. Sometimes she’d joke that he could be in the movies. Albert would always laugh and say, “If I were in the movies, I’d have won a bunch of Oscars by now.” Agnes would tease him for being full of himself.

The beef burger was served. The aroma was irresistible. As usual, Albert gave Agnes some side dishes. The place was empty that day, so Albert sat across from Agnes. They had done this before, just sit and chat. Albert knew she was an actress and they often gossiped about celebrities. Even though he was over fifty, he could still keep up with her,
