Heartstrings on Fire (Agnes and Jared) novel Chapter 896

All the explanations seemed superfluous now.

The disappointment over the whole Berlin debacle had escalated to the point where they were talking about taking a break, getting some space.

Jared couldn’t care less about space.

To him, it was just an excuse—Agnes' excuse for wanting out of the relationship.

But he couldn't let her slip away without a reason, not like this. No way!

They were at a stalemate when a faint voice from the bed cut through their standoff, "Dad, Mom, I don't feel so good."

Agnes and Jared turned simultaneously.

Their son, Nocturne, had woken up.

Agnes hurriedly let go of Jared and rushed to the bedside. Gently stroking Nocturne's forehead, she asked, "What's wrong, sweetie? Tell me where it hurts."

Jared moved closer as well.

"I'm just... tired of lying here, Mom. Can we leave the hospital? I want to go eat sushi, I crave Eel with rice."

It was the first time since his hospitalization that Nocturne had expressed a wish to eat anything.

This made Agnes' heart swell with happiness.

"Of course, we can go for sushi. Let's do it now," she promised.

"Dad's coming too, right?" Nocturne looked towards Jared.

"Sure thing, buddy. I'll drive us there," Jared replied.

And so, the three of them ended up at the sushi restaurant together.

As Nocturne described his dream, Agnes couldn't help but picture a cherubic little face in her mind.

Holding Nocturne, Jared asked, "Summer, what are you trying to say?"

With complete seriousness, Nocturne said, "Dad, Mom, can you give me a little sister? I want one."

Agnes was taken aback, "Nocturne, why this sudden request?"

"It's not really sudden," Nocturne explained. "I've wanted this for a long time, but Mom was always alone, and I didn't know who my dad was. It didn't seem realistic. But now, I really want a sister."

"Why a sister?" Agnes couldn't hide her curiosity. Nocturne was never impulsive.

"I won't be around to keep you company much longer," he said quietly. "I want a sister who can bring you happiness."

Agnes understood instantly. The argument with Jared must have made Nocturne feel responsible.
