Everything finally seemed to calm down. Agnes realized she wasn't too worse for wear. Though her back screamed with pain—as if smacked by a sledgehammer, but her mind was clear.
She was alive!
Agnes' first instinct was to check on Yara in her arms. Thank heavens, Yara was unharmed. But she seemed petrified, her little body stiff, her face etched with fear.
Agnes soothed her, "Yara, it's okay now, really, there's nothing to be scared of."
Suddenly, Yara blurted, "Blood, your forehead..."
Agnes reached up and felt warmth. Her hand came away slick with blood.
Probably a cut from the debris that had fallen.
Agnes, feeling a wave of dizziness, quickly tied a makeshift bandage with a scarf. She wanted to leave, to escape. But they were trapped. The fallen floorboard had created a protective triangle where Agnes had taken cover. A tiny space, but enough for Agnes to have dodged death.
Yet, that also meant they were buried beneath the rubble of the collapsed building.
Standing was impossible, let alone escape.
Their only option was to await rescue.
Agnes was sure someone would come, but the odds weren't in their favor.
The entire building had come down.
They were buried at the very bottom.
Rescuers would have to move a mountain to get to them.
And their exact location was a mystery.
