Chapter 9: Caspian Wants a Divorce
Selene had inherited more than just Lazarus Quinn’s last name—she had taken on his unshakable presence, his commanding authority, and his ability to intimidate a room into silence.
And now, she used every bit of it.
As her gaze swept across the room, the air grew thick with tension.
For a brief moment, the very people who had just been accusing her fell into uneasy silence.
Then, she spoke—her voice razor-sharp.
“Elowen.”
Elowen flinched, startled by the weight in Selene’s tone.
She quickly shuffled over, her voice quivering. “Y-yes…?”
Selene’s stare didn’t waver. “You were always close to Grandpa. Tell me what really happened.“
Elowen hesitated, her hands wringing together.
Then, finally, she spoke.
“Yesterday…” She paused, swallowing hard. “Mrs. Vale came to see Mr. Carter.”
Selene’s pulse quickened.
Elowen’s next words were careful, as if afraid to say too much.
“She showed him some photos. Photos of you… with other men… at a bar.”
The room felt like it dropped ten degrees.
Elowen stole a quick glance at Selene’s face, gauging her reaction before continuing.
“She said that Mr. Vale is seeking a divorce… and that he wanted Mr. Carter to support him in doing so.”
A heavy, suffocating silence followed.
Selene’s breath stilled.
Caspian… wanted a divorce?
She had expected it—hadn’t she? She had already braced herself for this moment.
And yet—hearing it confirmed was like being hit with a blade to the chest.
For a long moment, she just stood there, her hands clenched into fists.
Then, suddenly, she let out a soft, cold laugh.
Of course.
Of course, this was how Caspian planned to do it.
Lyra was pregnant. He needed to secure a future for her and their child.
And the easiest way to get Selene out of the way?
Destroy her in Lazarus’s eyes.
Turn her last remaining ally against her.
The Moment of Betrayal
At the end of the corridor, footsteps echoed.
Selene lifted her head.
Caspian was approaching.
For the first time, the distance between them felt wider than ever.
Elowen, still beside her, lowered her voice. “After Mrs. Vale left… Mr. Carter was in a terrible mood. He skipped dinner, and later that night, he…”
It clicked.
It all made sense now.
Lazarus had died thinking she had abandoned him.
And Caspian’s family had orchestrated it.
The hatred that burned inside her felt endless.
“Get out of my way.”
Her voice was sharp as steel, her eyes red with fury.
“I need to see Grandpa.”
At that moment, Caspian reached her side.
He immediately sensed the tension between her and Zephyr, his eyes narrowing slightly.
“What’s going on?” His voice was calm, controlled.
Then, instinctively, he did something that—just weeks ago—would have soothed her.
He placed a hand on her shoulder, firm but gentle. A silent reassurance.
But Selene immediately stepped away.
She didn’t even look at him.
Caspian hesitated.
He assumed it was just another argument with Zephyr. Another Carter family mess.
So he didn’t push.
Instead, he exhaled lightly and said, “Let’s go see your grandpa.“
With Caspian at her side, no one dared to stop her.
Together, they entered the room.
A Goodbye She Never Got to Say
The first thing Selene saw was the pristine white sheet covering Lazarus’s lifeless form.
“No. No, this isn’t real. Grandpa was just here. He was waiting for me—”
