Chapter 11
“Sign the damn papers, Adams!” Sophie’s voice was trembling with rage and despair.
When Adams made an attempt to step closer to her, she ducked her hand into her bag and brought out a knife, shoving it towards him threateningly.
“Sign the damn thing now or I’ll stab myself. You know that’s what I can do.” She threatened, her face determined to do all she could to get away from him.
Adams saw the flicker of determination in her eyes. He knew better than to dare Sophie so he stepped back with a defeated sigh.
“Sophie, put the knife down,” Adams pleaded, his voice calm as he raised his hands up in surrender. “We don’t have to do this.”
“Don’t come any closer!” Sophie screamed, pointing the knife toward herself. Her eyes, red from hours of crying, met his, filled with equal parts heartbreak and determination. “I’m serious, Adams. You sign these papers, or I swear to God, I’ll—”
“Okay! Okay,” he cut in, his hands shaking as he fumbled for a pen in his pocket. “Just… please don’t hurt yourself.”
Adams couldn’t believe how far things had spiraled. He didn’t even know what Brenda had said to Sophie, but it was clear whatever poison she’d planted in her mind had worked. His wife, his Sophie, was now a stranger with a blade in her hand and venom in her words.
“Do it!” Sophie snapped. “Sign it now!”
Adams hesitated for a moment, his pen hovering above the dotted line. His throat tightened, the reality of what he was about to do hitting him like a ton of bricks.
“Sophie, please… Can’t we talk this out?”
“There’s nothing left to talk about!” she shouted, tears streaming down her face. “You’ve already made your choice. You chose her. Now let me go!”
He looked up at her, his chest tightening at the sight of her pain. “I didn’t choose anyone over you. Whatever you think is going on, it’s not what you—”
“Shut up, Adams!” Sophie cut him off, slamming her free hand on the table. “You took her to our family doctor. She lost a baby! You think I don’t know? Stop lying to me!”
Adams’ face paled, and his lips parted, but no words came out. He wanted to explain, but he knew Sophie wouldn’t listen—not now. Not like this.
With a deep sigh, he scribbled his name on the divorce papers. His hand shook so much that the signature barely looked like his. As soon as he lifted the pen, Sophie snatched the papers away and stuffed them into her bag, her grip on the knife still firm.
