Chapter 31
Adam tried to take a step closer to Sophie, to talk to her, maybe she would understand.
He had barely moved when he saw Alex standing in front of Sophie, blocking him from approaching her. His eyes flicked between Sophie and Alex, confusion clouding his face.
Sophie stood still, her breath shallow as her fingers clutched Alex’s shirt. She shut her eyes, as though she could will the situation away.
Her voice, barely a whisper, escaped her lips. “Can we come back some other time?” she asked, a plea to avoid the inevitable confrontation.
Alex shook his head, his jaw set in a firm line. “No,” he said, his voice low but determined. “We’re doing this tonight. It’s time for you to face the truth, Adam.”
Sophie’s grip tightened, her anxiety bubbling to the surface. She could feel the tension in the air, could almost taste the anger radiating from Adam. But Alex wasn’t backing down. He was ready, and she needed him to be.
Brenda, who had been silently watching the exchange, was the next to break the silence.
Her eyes flared with anger as she watched Adam’s reaction to Sophie. She grabbed her bag with a swift motion, her face twisted in irritation.
“You’ve got a lot of nerve, Adam,” Brenda muttered under her breath, her voice sharp. “You expect me to stay around watching you gloat over your ex-wife!”
Without another word, Brenda stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind her.
Adam didn’t even spare her a glance, his focus solely on Sophie, his eyes burning with intensity.
“I’m not finished with you, Sophie,” Adam growled, his voice rough as he took a step forward. But Alex immediately stepped in, blocking him from getting any closer.
“Sophie doesn’t want to talk to you right now,” Alex said firmly, his eyes never leaving Adam. “And neither do I. We are here to tell you to finalize the divorce from your end. Can we meet in court tomorrow?”
“No!” Adam yelled in Alex’s face.
Adam’s face contorted with fury. He stepped forward, attempting to sidestep Alex, but Alex wasn’t budging.
“Move,” Adam snapped, trying to push Alex out of the way. “I’m still married to her. She’s my wife, and I’ll never let her go.”
The words cut through the air like a sharp blade, and Sophie’s heart sank as she heard them.
Her breath caught in her throat. Adam’s possessiveness had always been a part of him, but hearing him say those words now… it was too much.
Alex’s expression darkened. His muscles tensed as he finally turned to face Adam, his voice booming with conviction.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore, Adam!” Alex shouted. “Sophie’s made her choice. And she chose me. She’s going to marry me, whether you like it or not!”
