Chapter 35
“Is Brenda home?” Adam managed to ask, as he got over his shock, though his voice came out more as a demand than a question.
The man eyed him for a second, then nodded. “Yeah, she’s inside. But you’re gonna have to wait a minute.” The man stepped aside to let Adam enter, but Adam was too stunned to move.
“Who the hell are you?” Adam finally asked, his words sharp with disbelief.
Just then, Brenda stepped out, her hair still damp from the shower. She froze when she saw Adam standing there, looking more disheveled than she had ever seen him.
“Adam?” she said, her voice laced with a hint of confusion.
Her eyes flicked over to Alex, who was still lounging in the kitchen, as if everything was normal. Brenda’s lips tightened, and she stepped toward Adam, crossing her arms.
“What are you doing here?” she asked, her tone cool but sharp.
Adam’s anger flared again, but he kept his voice low. “What’s going on here, Brenda? Who is this guy?”
Brenda flashed Adam a smile wide and completely unfazed. “This is my cousin, Bobby. He’s from New Jersey,” she said, her voice light, casual, as if there wasn’t a half-naked man in her living room just moments ago.
Adam’s eyes flicked between the man and Brenda, his suspicions rising. Cousin? That was the best she could come up with?
But Brenda shot him a look that clearly said, Play along. So, with a tight smile, Adam nodded. “Nice to meet you,” he said, his voice strained but polite.
The man, Bobby, seemed to understand the unspoken tension in the room.
Without saying a word, he grabbed his shirt, quickly pulling it over his head, and made his way to the door. Before he exited, he glanced at Brenda with a wink.
“See you later,” he muttered, a smirk playing on his lips, and then he was gone.
The moment the door clicked shut behind him, Adam let out a breath, his shoulders relaxing only slightly. He wasn’t sure if he should be relieved or frustrated.
The situation felt off, but he didn’t have time to process it. Brenda was already moving, hopping over to the couch, and, without hesitation, plopping herself down on his lap.
“Brenda…” Adam said, his voice full of hesitation, his hands instinctively gripping the armrests as if trying to maintain some distance. The warmth of her body on his was… distracting.
She looked up at him, eyes sparkling mischievously. “You okay, baby?”
Adam stiffened slightly, trying to ignore the way her presence made everything inside him shift.
