Chapter 49
Alex’s phone buzzed on the desk, and the name Sophie flashed across the screen.
His heart skipped a beat. He had just settled into his office for a long day of meetings, but the moment he saw her name, everything else seemed to fade away.
He grabbed the phone immediately. “Sophie?” His voice was laced with concern, knowing she hadn’t been herself since the confrontation with Adam.
“I’m fine,” Sophie said quickly, but there was something in her tone that made him tense. “I was just wondering if I could start work today.”
Alex blinked, a frown tugging at his lips. “What? No, Sophie, the doctor said you need absolute rest. You can’t push yourself right now.”
“I’m just bored here,” Sophie admitted. “I don’t like staying idle.”
“Sophie, listen,” Alex sighed, trying to keep his tone gentle. “I get it, but you need to rest. Take a nap, and when you wake up, call me back, okay?”
Sophie was silent for a moment before finally agreeing. “Alright, I’ll rest. I’ll call you later.”
“Good. Rest up, and I’ll be thinking of you.”
Sophie disconnected the call, and Alex put his phone down with a sigh, trying to focus on his work.
He had barely gotten back to the pile of reports when the door to his office opened with a soft knock.
His secretary peeked her head around the door, looking unusually hesitant. “Mr. Alex, your sister is here to see you.”
Alex raised an eyebrow, surprised. “Emilia? Is everything okay?”
“She’s here,” the secretary answered, stepping aside to allow his sister into the room.
Emilia strolled in, her usual confident smile plastered on her face. But Alex could sense something was different about her today.
She seemed… serious. The usual playful glint in her eyes was missing.
