S2 65. I Don’t Reject You
Philip looked at her with a flat expression. “Why should I be angry?”
Barbara took a deep breath. “Since earlier, you haven’t wanted to talk
to me.”
“I think my presence here makes you uncomfortable. So, why am I talking? Please wait until the afternoon. Nora will come.”
Philip sat down and picked up his tablet again. His demeanor was calm. However, Barbara could see a faint throbbing in Philip’s jaw.
“Are you offended?”
Philip looked at her coldly. “Why am I offended? I’m nothing to you, right?”
Barbara bit her lip. Her eyes started to fill with tears.
“Sorry, I was just trying to make the atmosphere better. But I didn’t mean….”
The girl was unable to continue explaining for a few moments.
“The point is I’m sorry.”
Barbara started scratching her nail. Even though her gaze had shifted, Philip knew there was sadness there.
“Are you sorry you rejected me?”
“I’m not rejecting you.” Barbara’s voice trembled.
“But you ignored my statement this morning. You also wanted me to stay away.”
“That’s because I’m embarrassed.” Barbara let out a sob,
accompanied by a small whimper. Quickly, she bit her lip, holding

them together. She didn’t want Philip to know her pain.
However, Philip had already seen it. His gaze suddenly became sad. After putting his tablet on the table, he stood to examine Barbara. Does your wound hurt again?”
Receiving that kind of attention, Barbara could no longer pretend. “My heart hurts more.”
Philip exhaled quickly. He was confused about what Barbara was really thinking. “I’m the one who should be hurt because I was rejected. Why are you the one crying?”
“I told you, I’m not rejecting you.” Barbara glanced sarcastically. Her breath sounded painful.
Philip froze. His brows furrowed slightly. “So, you accept me?”
“Not really.”
Philip narrowed his eyes. “So?”
Barbara chuckled in annoyance. “Never mind, you won’t understand my feelings.” She turned her head the other way. Her tears spilled a
little.
Philip was pensive. His eyes locked on how Barbara scratched her nail harder. After a moment of silence, he leaned forward, his hands propping on the bed.
“Sorry if I’m insensitive. But I would never know if you didn’t say it directly. Actually, what do you want?”
Barbara didn’t answer. She bit her lip harder.
“Barbara?” Philip pinched the girl’s chin and turned her head gently.” What do you want?”
Barbara seemed hypnotized by his voice. She had to be honest. “I need time. All of this is too much for me.”

Philip’s gaze turned gentle, just like his voice. “But I can’t wait. I war to lighten your burden right now. So, please tell me. What is burdening you?”
“I doubt that you’re really interested in me.”
Philip’s eyebrows arched high. “Why? Do I look like I’m fooling around?
Barbara took a deep breath. Her eyes shifted to another direction. ” This is not about you, but me. My parents are divorced. My father was a failed businessman, while my mother….” Barbara’s lips trembled violently. Her voice faltered.
“You feel guilty because your mother attacked me?”
A single tear rolled down Barbara’s cheek. Philip quickly erased it.
“Hey, do you remember what I told you? I don’t care what happens to your family. I will always accompany you.”
“But my mother is a criminal. She even wanted to kill you. It’s a lie if
want to be friends with me.”

Philip sighed. Part of his heart was relieved because it turned out that his love was not one-sided. However, another part was heavy. He was afraid he would fail to convince Barbara.
“Okay, I give up. I admit that it was a lie. I don’t want to be friends with
you anymore.”
Barbara gasped. She didn’t think Philip would give her what her logic wanted. Her tears thickened. She couldn’t deny that the hot coals had
cracked her heart.
“Why are you only being honest now? You should have admitted from the start that you were sick of being friends with me. I’m always giving you trouble and getting you into trouble, right?” Barbara didn’t

realize that Philip’s eyes were so dim.
“I only realized it yesterday, when I saw you stabbed with that knife realized that you weren’t supposed to be my friend, but my lover.”
Barbara suddenly stopped crying. Her eyes widened, her ears pricked up. “What did you say?”
Philip raised the corner of his lips. “You should be my lover. That way, I can more easily protect you, look after you, and make you happy. And I have the right to always be near you.”
Barbara was stunned. Half of her heart was covered with flowers, while the other half was filled with bushes. Unfortunately, her logic chose the messy part.
“Are you still playing that lie?”
Philip flinched. “You don’t believe that I’m honest?”
“Because it’s impossible. What attracted you to me? Is it pity?”
Philip shook his head. “Where did confident Barbara go?”
