S31 2. Painful Rejection
“Well,” Frank sighed faintly, “we don’t really know each other. We’ve never met, let alone talked.”
Diana turned away, as if she couldn’t bear to look at Frank any longer. Frank’s heart became increasingly burdened.
“But judging from the look in your eyes just now, you clearly know that I am Rowan Harper’s grandson-your grandson.”
Diana turned her head further. Her tears thickened. “I don’t know that name. Please stop claiming to be my grandson. I never had a grandchild.”
Frank swallowed bitterly. He was mistreated by his father and grandfather, then he was abandoned by his mother. Now he was disowned by his grandmother?
Before he realized how cruel the reality of his life was, Kara froze his
sadness.
“Frank,” he turned, “I think you’d better not discuss it now. Give Mrs. Johnson some time, hmm?”
Diana glanced at Kara with furrowed eyebrows. “I don’t need time. I will never acknowledge anyone who isn’t my grandson. So, stop bothering me!”
“Grandma Diana!”
A toddler’s voice suddenly broke the tension. Everyone looked over.
Jeremy turned out to be running with Louis and Emily on each arm. The two toddlers waved and laughed.
“Grandma Diana!”

The old woman’s breath hitched again. Her heart was always weak whenever she faced children. But then, she managed to remind herself that they were part of the Harper family. When the twins rushed over to hug her, her hands clenched into fists.
“Great-Grandmother! We are so happy to meet you.” Louis tightened
his embrace.
With the same gesture, Emily looked up at Frank. “Daddy, I was right, wasn’t I? Grandma Diana is very beautiful. She must also be kind.”
Diana started clutching her chest. Her chin trembled even though she had pressed her lips as tightly as possible, holding back the turmoil in her chest as best she could.
Meanwhile, Frank was unable to nod. He did not dare to raise the twins’ hopes. It would be very painful if the toddlers received direct rejection. Therefore, he only raised the corners of his lips slightly.
“Grandma Diana,” Louis stepped back and looked up, “let me introduce myself. I’m Louis and this is my sister, Emily. We are twins. I was born first.”
Emily stood beside Louis with a sweet smile. Her body wiggled slightly. “Grandma Diana is beautiful,” she covered her mouth and giggled.
Louis pointed his index finger in front of his mouth. “Shhh…. Don’t scare her, Emily. You can compliment her when you get to know each other later. Getting compliments from strangers is strange. Now, say hello, Grandma.”
Emily’s eyes narrowed. She smiled amusedly. It’s unusual for Louis to be more mature than her.
“Hello, Grandma Diana. I’m Emily. I’m glad to have a great- grandmother as beautiful as you.”
Emily waved while tilting her head. Her expression was very adorable. However, Diana didn’t care. One of her hands was holding her neck. She looked uncomfortable.
Kara could tell the old woman was holding herself back from
answering. Before the twins faced the disappointment, she reached out to them.
“Little Angels, Grandma Diana has just come back from the orphanage. She must be tired. How about you let her rest?”
Kara’s words reminded Diana of how bad she would be if she rejected the children. However, she stayed silent.
Meanwhile, the two toddlers were too innocent. Their voices became even louder.
“I want to walk Grandma Diana to her room!” Emily gave a small jump.
“Me too! Where is her room?”
Diana didn’t have much time left to consider. When the twins were about to grab her hand, she dodged.
“I don’t need your help. Now go. I want to rest.”
The twins were stunned to see Diana leave. When her back
disappeared, they looked at Kara with fading twinkle in their eyes.
“Mommy, doesn’t Grandma like us? Why does Grandma ignore us?” Emily’s voice was as fragile as her heart.
“Did we say something wrong? But I don’t think we did anything wrong.” Louis looked down, thinking hard.
Frank sighed in pity. “Kids,” he stroked the two gloomy faces, “don’t think badly. Grandma Diana just feels that she doesn’t know us.”
“But we are her family. She is your grandmother, our great-
grandmother. How could she not know us?”
Kara bowed too. Her hands rest on her knees.
“That’s because this is our first meeting with her. She has never heard of us. Even Daddy is considered a stranger to her. So, let’s approach Grandma Diana slowly, hmm?”
Louis’ cheeks puffed up. His lips looked pursed. “Is she the same as Grandpa Rowan before?”
Emily let out a weary breath. “Why doesn’t everyone like us, Mommy? First, it was Grandpa Rowan, then Grandma Melanie, Auntie, and now Grandma Diana. I think we’re not bad kids.”
Barbara shook her head swiftly. “I don’t hate you, Guys. It’s just that we were enemies at that time, remember? Of course I don’t want to admit that you toddlers are adorable.”
The twins glanced at Barbara from the top corners of their eyes. “You also ignored us at the beginning.”
