Aaron and Casper had been best friends since childhood. They grew up together and attended the same schools. Their bond seemed unbreakable. But was there something Eliza didn't know that had come between them? She needed to get to the bottom of it.
Eliza’s reminder brought back a long-buried memory for Caroline. “They were indeed close... Aaron once had a fiancée—she was a dear friend of mine. She jumped from a building a few days before their wedding... and she was pregnant.”
Eliza was stunned. She had never heard a word about this. Aaron had never mentioned it, nor had Casper. What kind of woman was she, and what pushed her to such a desperate act?
“Was Casper involved...?” Eliza asked, her voice trembling.
Years had passed, and Caroline was hesitant to revisit the past. Her eyes showed a mix of pain and sorrow. “Her name was May. We were very close. A few days before she jumped, she came to me several times in complete agony. She said she had seen Aaron’s dark side and couldn’t bring herself to marry him. But she couldn’t bear to abort the child either; she was utterly lost.”
“She said she loved him but couldn’t accept his wild ways. She was losing sleep over it…”
To Caroline, Aaron seemed like he had a split personality. On the surface, he was the heir to the Martin family, a doctor with a bright future, always polished and polite. But…
May had confided in Caroline about Aaron’s secret life. He threw wild parties with men and women, naked gatherings, and even more twisted activities. May was a reserved woman; she couldn’t accept this. She had tried everything—reasoning, arguing, fighting, even begging—but nothing worked. A leopard doesn’t change its spots.
Caroline sighed deeply, unable to continue. Eliza could feel the hopelessness that must have consumed May.
