Eliza's heart sank like a stone, anxiety and unease swirling in her chest, her eyes brimming with deep concern.
Carlos gently patted her shoulder, trying to comfort her. "Even though he got hurt because of you, you don't need to beat yourself up about it."
How could she not blame herself? What if he never wakes up? Her gaze turned somber.
Eliza followed the nurse into the hospital room. Casper lay there, quietly asleep.
Carlos leaned in and whispered, "Let me stay and take care of him. If Gina shows up again, I can handle her. Plus, it's easier for me as a man."
Eliza hesitated. If Carlos had conventional interests, she might actually trust him to take care of Casper for a few days while she dealt with Gina's mess. But his interests were unconventional. What if he did something while Casper was unconscious? No, she couldn't risk it.
"No, I'll take care of him," Eliza declined Carlos' 'kind' offer.
Carlos opened his mouth to argue, but Eliza cut him off. "He got hurt because of me. It's only right that I stay with him. Mr. Carlos, why don't you head home?"
"It's just not practical for you to care for him as a woman," Carlos tried again.
"It's fine."
She didn't give him another chance to argue, offering a faint smile instead. Carlos swallowed his words reluctantly.
"Alright, I get it. But I mean it."
Eliza just smiled and said no more.
After Carlos left, Eliza sat by the hospital bed, staring at Casper's pale face, lost in thought...
