Helgen—
The enigma of the mountaintop mansion.
Lush greenery, picturesque views.
In the dimly lit bedroom, a soothing lavender candle burned quietly on an antique holder, its gentle smoke curling through the air, bringing a sense of peace. All the chaos of the world outside seemed to fade away here.
Evadne lay stretched out on the plush, king-sized bed, her lashes resting softly on her cheeks as she slept.
She was still in her pristine wedding dress, a vision of beauty and fragility. Even fairy tale princesses would pale in comparison.
A tall, elegant figure sat in a wheelchair, backlit and silent, facing Evadne.
“Sir, I've checked her over. There are no visible injuries,” Alexia reported. She had dabbled in medicine enough to handle a basic examination. “Her blood tests came back showing traces of sedatives and anesthesia, but nothing harmful.”
With a hint of sarcasm, she added, “I told you, Avery loves her too much to poison her.”
“A little caution never hurts.” Chad Abernathy's voice was smooth and clear, like a gentle breeze through a crystal chime. “It seems Ms. Evadne has had a rough time on Rose Island. I recall she was once a picture of health, well cared for by my brother. Now, she seems more fragile. Still, she's breathtakingly beautiful.”
“Sir, in all my years with you, I've rarely heard you praise anyone,” Alexia remarked, her tone betraying a tinge of jealousy. “You're quite taken with Ms. Evadne.”
Chad's lips curved into a faint smile. “Are you jealous?”
Alexia bit her lip. “No.”
“Is it no, or you just don't dare?”
She looked down, conceding, “Neither, sir. I wouldn't dare.”
“Alexia, you're not lacking compared to others. If anything, it's your lack of patience, strategy, and composure.”
Chad's gaze was amused, “Remember what I've taught you.”
“Do not fall in love, do not become attached, and do not look back,” Alexia recited with a hint of bitterness. “Without you, I wouldn't be who I am today. Your teachings are engraved in my heart, sir.”
