Chasel’s face drained of color. He stumbled back half a step, shocked.

“What did you just say?”

Alexia, standing off to the side, kept her face perfectly composed, but the tiniest flicker of a smirk tugged at the corner of her mouth.

“We broke up,” Thaddeus repeated, even colder than before.

“You son of a—!” Chasel lunged forward, grabbing Thaddeus by the collar of his crisp shirt, his knuckles turning white with anger. “Evadne wasted her best years on you! She lost your child, she gave you everything! She’s heartbroken, her health’s wrecked—and just an hour ago, she coughed up blood and ended up in the ICU. She’s still unconscious!”

Chasel’s voice shook with rage and pain. “Even if you don’t love her anymore, don’t you have any sense of responsibility? You think you can just toss her aside and walk away? What the hell is wrong with you?!”

He’d tried so hard these past few days to keep it together, not to bring up anything that would tear open Evadne’s wounds. He knew everyone around them was anxious, worried sick, but all those emotions would just make things worse for her.
