A chill went down Edith's spine, prompting her to instinctively take a small step backwards.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone present, Evadne, with her mesmerizing eyes and an aura that screamed of icy indifference, walked up to her.
Even in her heels, Edith was still a head shorter than Evadne.
It was not just about the height difference, but the overwhelming presence that Evadne possessed. It made Edith feel utterly insignificant, as if she was overshadowed without Evadne even uttering a word.
"What do you want?" Edith's face turned ashen.
"Just answering a question that's been bothering you," Evadne responded, her composure unshaken. She removed her surgical cap, allowing her hair to cascade down, an image of sheer elegance. "Your beloved Thad is out of danger. There's no need to pray anymore."
Suddenly, she leaned in closer, whispering in Edith's ear, "After all, asking for my help would make more sense. Since he got injured because of me, I have the ability to heal him and to take responsibility for his life. There's no need for you to worry."
Edith’s shoulders shook, her face flushed with anger as she faced Evadne's challenge. The realization that Evadne had overheard her earlier conversation hit her hard.
Just as Edith was contemplating a comeback, Jareth chimed in with his sparkling eyes, "Evadne, can you perform surgeries too?"
"Of course, who else would do it, a donkey?" Evadne retorted, wiping the sweat off her forehead. She was exhausted from the long surgery and wasn’t in a mood to entertain.
"No, no. I mean, you're amazing, just brilliant!" Jareth was at a loss of words to praise her.
"If you paid attention in school, you'd have a better vocabulary to compliment someone," Evadne shot back, shaking her head. She wondered why Marilla was interested in someone like him.
Edith was seething with anger, wishing she could silence Jareth once and for all!
Suddenly, the sound of hurried footsteps echoed from the other end of the corridor.
"Chairman Emeric! President Ashbourne! I just received the news of your arrival. Please forgive my tardiness in welcoming you!" Mr. Larry, the dean of the hospital, accompanied by the deputy dean and two medical experts, greeted Emeric and Cassius from afar, his demeanor respectful and cordial.
"There's no need for formalities, Mr. Larry. We didn't want to disturb your work," Emeric replied amicably, showing no airs of superiority.
"Oh, Mr. Larry, come meet my daughter, Evadne!" Emeric introduced Evadne, not missing a chance to flaunt his talented daughter, much like a proud peacock. "You won't believe this! My daughter is an exceptional surgeon! She just finished a serious surgery that lasted more than ten hours, and she was the lead surgeon!"
Cassius and Jareth were taken aback at the mention of the term 'lead surgeon'.
Mr. Larry and the deputy dean exchanged surprised glances, looking at Emeric in disbelief. "Chairman Emeric, she's your daughter?"
Emeric frowned, "What kind of question is that? If she's not my daughter, is she yours?"
"No, no. I mean, don't you know who your daughter is?"
Emeric was puzzled, "Know what?"
Mr. Larry took a deep breath and with utmost respect, introduced Evadne once again in front of everyone.
"Her medical skills are legendary. She's the renowned Dr. Eve!"
"Emeric! There are so many people here. You can't say things like that!" Evadne blushed, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Ilana."
Hamilton's eyes brimmed with tears of surprise as he approached, his hands gripping her shoulders, repeatedly surveying the exquisite woman before him. No matter how much he looked, it was never enough. "Ilana, I apologize, the Abernathy Group has failed you," he said.
"Grandpa, what are you talking about? Please, don't say that."
"No, it’s our family who has delayed you."
The more Hamilton thought about it, the heavier his heart felt. He couldn't bear to let go, "What should I do? Besides you, I don't want anyone else near my grandson. Apart from you, no one else can be my granddaughter-in-law! I am being greedy, shameless even! I want no one else, I want Ilana!"
Emeric glared, feeling discontented. Just as he was about to speak, Cassius firmly held him back.
"Grandpa, why are you acting like a child?" Evadne was flustered by Hamilton's words, her cheeks flushed with a faint blush.
At this moment, Evadne was the center of attention, everyone adored her, loved her.
And standing outside the crowd, Edith's face was ashen, ignored by everyone. Even her own brother didn't spare her a glance, she was completely forgotten.
Hamilton's words just now were like a thorn in her heart, the pain and hatred intertwined, causing her to mentally kill Evadne over and over again!
