Evadne, her mind a whirlpool of emotion, zoomed back to her villa in Elmsworth.
She originally had set out to deal with Elspeth, but on her drive back, all she could think about was the image of Thaddeus pushing her against the wall.
The man's fiery gaze was locked onto her. Her own reflection in his passionate eyes was dark and sorrowful. His anger was tinged with helplessness and humiliation, an image she couldn't shake off. Her fingers, white-knuckled around the steering wheel, felt numb as if zapped with electricity.
His eyes were loaded with affection.
But what did it prove?
Even if his gaze could pierce through her, it couldn't hide the fact that he was still the same old Thaddeus, secretly sleeping with Edith behind her back!
Stepping out of her car with a gloomy expression, Evadne was surprised to see Cassius, Aaron, and Jason, already waiting for her at the entrance of her villa.
"Evadne!"
"Cassius, Aaron, Jason. Why are you all here?" Evadne asked surprisingly, trying to muster up.
"We heard from Aaron that you went to the Abernathy family alone without even taking Jason. What were you thinking, girl? Going on a solo mission?"
Cassius sighed with worry, stepping forward to wrap an arm around her shoulder, "But then I heard Thaddeus was home tonight too. I was relieved. With him there, he wouldn't let you be wronged."
"Why wouldn't I be wronged if he was there?" Evadne frowned, her lips pursed in displeasure.
"He cares for you, and he'd protect you."
"What a poor joke, Cassius."
Evadne's heart lurched, her tone becoming even more resistant, "I was his wife for three years, three years in which I was humiliated and wronged in the Abernathy family because of him, and he never once stood up for me. Now we're not even strangers. Why should he defend me?"
"That's right, Cassius."
Aaron stepped forward, hands in his pockets and a smirk on his face, "Thaddeus is a heartless, ungrateful guy. Even if he didn't love Evadne, she was still his wife, and he had the duty to protect her. But look at what he's done! As the saying goes, a leopard never changes its spots. See, he just started pursuing Evadne and he's already back to his old tricks!"
"Aaron, what tricks?" Jason asked, oblivious to the situation.
"He's back to his old flame, Edith, Jareth's unlucky sister!" Aaron's tongue was as sharp as ever, a trait inherited from Arnold and Elvis, even better than them.
Jason coughed lightly, not commenting.
"Well, Aaron, you have a way with words. Speak some more." Evadne nodded in agreement.
Suddenly, Cassius's gaze hardened, looking past Evadne to a distance behind her.
"Mr. Chambers?"
Evadne, taken aback, turned around.
In the dimness of the night, Avery's sports car was parked not far away. Its engine was off, lights out, as quiet as if it wasn't even there.
He didn't get out of the car, but sat in the driver's seat, leaning forward, his forearms resting on the steering wheel, his gaze fixed intently on her.
Evadne bit her lip, meeting his gaze.
She didn't greet him, nor did she approach him.
In the light, she could clearly see Avery slowly lower his body, burying most of his handsome face in his arms, leaving only a pair of beautiful but lonely eyes visible.
His pitiful and lonely gaze, like a wounded puppy, was the same as when she saw him being punished by Mr. Chambers in the rain fifteen years ago.
"Wait, when did he follow us here? Didn't even make a sound. What a ghost." Aaron couldn't help but shudder, feeling a chill down his spine.
Cassius looked towards Avery's direction, then back at Evadne with a complicated expression, "He followed you to the Abernathy family?"
"Yes."
Just then, the sports car started up again, turned around smoothly, and drove off into the night.
"Huh? He just left?"
Aaron furrowed his eyebrows in astonishment, "Evadne, who are these people chasing after you? They're either the scoundrels or stalking psychos. How can I not worry about your safety when you're out there alone?"
"Let's get to the point."
Evadne didn't want to think about Avery anymore. She just asked with a serious expression, "Aaron, how's everything going on Alex's side? Is he still refusing to talk?"
Aaron sighed with frustration, "I'm afraid it might take some more time. That beast is more loyal than we thought. He's so devoted to Elspeth. Anyone would think they're married!"
"I thought of that. He was willing to kill for Elspeth. Of course he wouldn't easily spill the beans."
Evadne crossed her arms, her gaze deep and frosty, "That's why I told you to interrogate him in the way I suggested. I wanted to break his will. When his mental defenses are weak, we'll strike a fatal blow to his fortress, like feelings for Elspeth."
"Evadne, whatever you plan, we're with you!" Aaron was already rubbing his hands together, determined to make the couple pay for their crimes.
"Just having Alex testify against Elspeth isn't enough."
