Emeric broke the news to the three ladies, all of whom were quite taken aback. They all wanted to accompany him to visit Evadne, but he insisted on going alone.
After finally persuading the ladies to stay, he sent them back to their homes in Skyrim.
Emeric, followed closely by his secretary Mr. Dylan and a bodyguard, exited the airport and indeed found Avery, standing tall and poised beside a luxury car, waiting for him.
"Mr. Emeric, good to see you." Avery greeted him with a warm smile and a respectful bow.
After a moment's consideration, Emeric got into Avery's car, his bodyguard and secretary following in their own vehicle.
After all, Avery had said he had something to discuss concerning Evadne.
Normally, someone as junior as him wouldn't even get a chance to meet someone as influential as Emeric, even as the son of Jeff. But if it concerned Evadne, Emeric couldn't just ignore it.
The luxurious car smoothly set off towards the hospital.
"Mr. Emeric, I've been by Evadne's side these past few days. Her mood has been very unstable, very down." Avery's eyes brimmed with sorrow. "I've known her for quite some time, but this is the first time I've seen her in such pain. If you were to see her, it would cut you to the core. I'm well aware of how much you care for her."
Emeric felt as if an arrow had pierced his heart, the pain unbearable.
It was common knowledge that among Emeric's many children, Evadne was his favorite, his most beloved. No one could compare.
It was like someone telling him that his daughter had been wronged, had been hurt. It felt as if his heart was being deep-fried, the agony indescribable!
And Avery knew exactly how to play this.
He knew that Emeric's fatal weakness was Evadne.
"Avery, tell me, what happened while I was away?" Emeric looked at Avery anxiously. "What kind of trouble has Evadne gotten herself into? Who's turned my precious daughter into such a state?"
"Mr. Emeric, who else could make a strong girl like Evadne heartbroken?"
Avery clenched his fist, his eyes cold. "Who was it who hurt her, who threw her away with his own hands, and who kept pestering her, breaking her heart over and over?"
"Thaddeus?" Emeric's thick brows furrowed deeply.
"There's no one else it could be."
"Did that rascal have anything to do with Evadne's car accident?"
Avery adjusted his glasses, his expression solemn. "All I know is that on the day of Evadne's accident, she went to see Thaddeus. I don't know what happened between them that would make Evadne so distracted on her way home that she had an accident. The car was totaled, but thankfully she wasn't seriously injured."
"What will it take for him to stop bothering my daughter!" Emeric slammed his hand on the car door, his anger uncontrollable.
"There's also another thing, Mr. Emeric. I don't know if I should tell you." Avery hesitated.
"Tell me! Whatever that boy has done to my daughter, tell me everything!" Emeric's eyes were bloodshot with rage, his body shaking.
Avery's eyes flickered, and with a low voice, he told Emeric about how Thaddeus had once taken full advantage of Evadne when she was unconscious.
He was very clever. From the way Thaddeus apologized to Evadne that day, to Evadne's reaction, and then their encounters in the past few days, he had a pretty good idea of what had happened.
Even the parts he didn't fully understand didn't matter.
Whatever Thaddeus couldn't bring himself to say, he would fill in the blanks.
Emeric stayed silent as Avery spoke, not uttering a single word.
Only his heavy, hate-filled breathing could be heard in the dimly lit car.
"Mr. Emeric, try not to get too worked up. You need to take care of your health." Avery's eyes were full of concern.
"That Abernathy boy. How much more is he planning to torment my daughter!" Emeric clutched his chest in agony, his heart aching as if it were bleeding!
"Although some unfortunate things have happened to Evadne in the past, all that matters is that it's in the past. I will protect Evadne from now on."
Avery's gaze was fixed on Emeric, burning with sincerity. "I swear, all of my love belongs to Evadne. I will make her the happiest woman in the world. Mr. Emeric, my love for Evadne has nothing to do with her being your daughter, or any connections to the Chambers Group or the Ashbourne Group. I love her for who she is. Since childhood, there has never been a woman who could replace Evadne in my heart. Never."
Emeric looked at him in shock, staring at his eyes that shone with earnestness.
Before, he had harbored some resentment towards this young boy of the Chambers family, and towards the entire Chambers family. He had never experienced a so-called "marriage of convenience", and he didn't want Evadne to marry someone she didn't love and suffer for the rest of her life.
But now, it seemed that Avery truly loved Evadne.
He was a man who had been there before, and he knew that the love in Avery's eyes when he spoke of Evadne was something that couldn't be faked.
Perhaps he shouldn't indulge his daughter any longer.
She had always said that she wanted to pursue happiness, but at the end of the day, what had she found? A man who couldn't control his own desires, and who was a scoundrel!
"Avery Chambers."
