After being rescued, Acacia was moved to a general ward.
The doctors said her condition wasn't that bad. Even though the wound was deep, it didn't need stitches.
The main reason she passed out was due to extreme panic and stress.
"Honey! You're finally awake!"
Una stood by the bed, crying her heart out, "I thought I'd never see you again!"
"Enough, stop crying. Thaddeus isn't here crying his eyes out. You're making a racket."
Elspeth seemed very impatient. Arms crossed, she stood by the window and asked, "Have you guys sorted out how to deal with this mess?"
"What mess?" Una wiped her tears, looking somewhat clueless.
"Did you guys screw everything up?"
Elspeth looked at her sister, feeling angry. "You can't do anything right. I've been spoiling you and helping you all these years. Without me, do you think your daughter would have a good chance with Thaddeus? With your brains, do you want your daughter to marry into the rich and famous? Not in a million years!"
Acacia also felt a sense of dissatisfaction because her mother was too blind to see some things.
To make ends meet, her mother sold the necklace Thaddeus gave her. That was bad enough, but her mother sold the necklace to the Ashbourne family, and it even showed up at an auction. This would definitely worsen her relationship with Thaddeus and cause trouble!
"Elspeth, if you're going to talk like this, I need to argue with you!"
Una had always been criticized by Elspeth. This time she was criticized by Elspeth in front of her daughter, making her feel very embarrassed and angry. "Today, Acacia and I successfully framed Ilana. What's up with your daughter? Why did she ruin our plans at such a crucial moment? If she hadn't meddled, how could things have ended up like this?!"
"How was I supposed to know Marilla would be in the bathroom? Acacia, how did I teach you? How could you be so careless when you're up to something and leave clues that you don't even know about?"
Elspeth was also very angry, but it was indeed her responsibility, so she could only shift the blame onto Acacia.
Acacia felt wronged and didn't say a word.
"In general, there's no solid evidence to prove that Acacia inflicted the wound on herself. Acacia, if Thaddeus asks you about this, just play dumb. Thaddeus has feelings for you so this should be resolved easily."
Elspeth massaged her temples and said coldly, "If not, I'll find a way to make Thaddeus forgive you."
"I got it, Auntie."
Acacia thought of Suri's protection of Ilana, and she felt very jealous. "Does Ilana have some kind of secret? Why do the Ashbourne family treat her so well? Why does Suri favor her so much, treating her like her own daughter? If this continues, Ilana will definitely bully us!"
Mentioning Suri made Elspeth's face change.
"Suri is not the wife of the Ashbourne family and she's just a woman that Chairman Emeric likes! I respect her because I respect Chairman Emeric but she doesn't know how to be grateful and is rude to me!"
"Yeah! Auntie, you're my uncle's legal wife; how can Suri compare to you?" Acacia quickly praised Elspeth. After all, she wanted to marry into the Abernathy family and had to rely on Elspeth.
Una sneered in her heart. How could Elspeth have the right to criticize Suri? Wasn't Elspeth's position stolen too? If Thaddeus's birth mother hadn't been murdered by her, Elspeth wouldn't be able to marry Frederic with her barren body!
"I won't let Ilana marry into the Ashbourne family smoothly. What's the point of pleasing Suri?"
Elspeth squinted, her eyes flashing with a cold light. "Only if Emeric accepts her would it matter. I heard from Frederic that Chairman Emeric is a tough cookie. He cares a lot about his family's reputation. Cassius is his chosen heir. As his eldest son, he would definitely want Cassius to marry a daughter from a prestigious family. How could he let his son marry a country girl? There will be plenty of days to come. Let Ilana enjoy her moment for now; I will make her cry eventually!"
As soon as Elspeth's voice fell, the door to the ward was flung open.
A chill filled the room as Thaddeus's tall figure appeared in the doorway.
"Thad." Acacia was scared, putting on a pitiful face.
Thaddeus scoffed, "Do mothers usually belittle their own children in front of others? I wouldn't know because I don't have a mother."
Elspeth's face changed instantly.
Thaddeus, usually as stiff as a board at home, made her feel so humiliated when he countered her.
"So, Acacia, why are you doing this? If I chose you, then I won't go back to Ilana. Why are you still picking fights with her?" Thaddeus suppressed his anger, his disappointment in her growing deeper, like a heavy chain constricting his heart, almost suffocating him.
He was still willing to call her "Acacia", a sign of respect for their childhood bond and for the redemption she once offered. After all, Acacia was the only light in his dark childhood.
He was afraid that this light would go out, that his all-in choice was a mistake.
"I didn't! It wasn't me! It wasn't me!" Acacia shouted, beating the bed frantically, her usually gentle eyes filled with rage, "She stole my man! Now she wants to paint me as the bad guy! Glynnis told me that Ilana was always close with Marilla when she was with the Abernathy family. It must be their conspiracy against me! Thad, would you rather believe them over me? Are you falling for Ilana? Do you not want me anymore?"
"I've always liked you, even during the three years I was married to Ilana. My feelings for you never changed, and I never laid a hand on her." Thaddeus tried hard to control his emotions, but his mood turned sour.
He thought of Ilana taking the blame without hesitation when she was accused, her swollen wrist, the disappointed look on her face when she turned around and saw him.
Thaddeus took a deep breath, his throbbing headache blurring his vision. "But Acacia, I don't understand what you're doing lately. Do you not want to be with me anymore?"
"No, that's not it, Thad, Thad!" Acacia watched as Thaddeus left resolutely; she panicked and fell off the bed, then rushed to the door.
All she heard was the dull sound of the door closing and a gust of cold wind.
Acacia kicked the hospital room door in anger, but kicked too hard and started screaming in pain.
She won't let Ilana off the hook!
Since Ilana wanted to be her enemy? Well, the feeling was mutual!
