Dog food? What the heck?
Evadne and Thaddeus exchanged bewildered glances while Cassius stared at Chasel's androgynously captivating face with astonishment.
Cedric had his mouth hung open, and his eyes bulging like twin flamethrowers!
A crushing sense of humiliation slammed into him as he felt the events of that night playing vividly before his eyes—panic, fear, and shame made him shudder like a leaf in the wind!
“You ew!” Cedric clutched his mouth, feeling himself on the verge of puking again!
“Mr. Cedric, you look like you’re in pain there,” Chasel remarked, stepping back to join Cassius as if Cedric was infected with some contagious disease; his eyes were glinting mischievously. “But considering your breath’s usually worse than a porta-potty at a rock festival, eating a bit of crap probably didn’t make much of a difference to you. It’s just ended up where it belongs, hasn’t it?”
Eating crap?!
Holy smokes! That’s more explosive than Byron flashing the crowd at the concert!
“Ugh—!”
The persistent stench hit Cedric again. With his hands clamping over his mouth, he stumbled out the door in a frantic dash.
“Hahaha Hilarious! I’d die laughing!” Chasel was in stitches, with tears nearly streaming from his laughter, as he elbowed the handsome man next to him. “Come on, why aren’t you guys laughing? This is gold! I could laugh about it for years! Hahaha!”
Cassius watched him silently.
That vibrant and unrestrained laugh made the corners of his lips turn up instinctively; his gaze was deepening as it reflected Chasel’s mirth.
“Chasel sweetie, spill the beans! What happened?” Evadne blinked her sparkling eyes, her face alight with the anticipation of a child waiting for a bedtime story.
Chasel, sweetie?
Thaddeus’s eyebrows drew together, while his grip on the lady’s waist was tightening.
She was sweetening up her words to snag some gossip, without a care for how it made him feel.
“Well, I was at high tea with my aunties one day, and Aviana spilled the beans.”
Chasel, animated as ever, regaled them with the tale of how Aviana commanded her minions to beat up Cedric and feed him the crap.
Silence fell upon the room for a brief moment.
Then, Evadne burst into laughter, leaning into Thaddeus and shaking like a willow in the wind, with her eyes sparkling like tiny pearls.
Thaddeus wrapped his arms around her, his lips curving into a smile.
He was usually a man of few words and even fewer smiles, except around Evadne.
He laughed now, not because the story itself was funny, but because her happiness was infectious.
“Aviana’s a legend! A true warrior among women!” Evadne gasped between laughs, and her hands didn’t stop clapping until they were red.
Thaddeus was taken aback, “Aviana is the daughter of the bigwig from the S-Star Group?!”
S-Star Group, the premier gang in Elmsworth, was known far and wide.
They had a checkered past, but in recent years, they were moving towards legitimacy by cleaning up their act and engaging in charity. Mr. Griffith, Aviana’s father and the head of S-Star Group, even served as an idol to Jareth. That kid must have watched every single movie and series inspired by S-Star Group for countless times.
But he never knew Aviana’s background was so wild!
Chairman Ashbourne, what a legend.
“Just finding out now, huh? How can you dare to be with me without knowing my family's business, huh?” Evadne playfully flicked his head, “As for my stepmoms, none of them can be underestimated.”
Thaddeus looked at her with a wry smile; her family's complexity was enough to make his head spin. It would take quite the imagination to picture Aviana as the daughter of S-Star Group’s boss.
“Evadne, don’t be too hard on Thaddeus. Aside from those close to him, Mr. Griffith never made Aviana’s identity public.”
Cassius, in a good mood after dealing with Jason’s issue, dropped the cold formality and reverted to his earlier, friendlier address for Thaddeus. “After all, the underworld is a treacherous place, full of hidden dangers. Mr. Griffith’s actions are to protect his only daughter.”
Thaddeus pressed his lips together, feeling a warm surge in his heart.
He knew, deep down, Cassius was like him—cold in his appearance but full of warmth inside.
“Yeah, that’s true. Mr. Griffith may have cursed Emeric for stealing his precious daughter and have thus talked about disowning her, but I know he adores Aviana in his heart.”
Evadne nodded earnestly, then suddenly, she hit her fist into her palm in a gesture of realization, and sighed with a hint of regret, “I heard it tastes a bit like blue cheese. That sycophant Cedric ran off so fast; I didn’t even get to ask him. Ah, I’m so curious!”
It wasn't even dawn yet, but Jason’s day had already brightened.
The night had been full of twists and turns. Before the arrival of the young lady and her entourage, Jason was a mere suspect at the mercy of others.
But now—
Chief Roderick personally escorted him out of his cell, not only freeing him but also greeting him with an eager grin and a stream of pleasant words.
Jason was flabbergasted; he had been locked up, totally oblivious to the thrilling standoff that had taken place in the police station that night.
