The afternoon sun streamed through the curtains as Evadne finally woke from her deep slumber. She was notorious for being able to sleep in like a hibernating bear, but Thaddeus, ever the light sleeper, had only managed a few hours before he was wide awake.
Having not left the room, Thaddeus had been quietly handling urgent matters for the family business from the comfort of the living room sofa, all while keeping a silent vigil over her.
Suddenly, Evadne let out a gasp, bolting upright from the bed.
Thaddeus immediately dropped the files he was working on and rushed to her side, wrapping her in his arms. "What's wrong? Bad dream?" he asked gently.
Evadne, her breath still uneven, clutched his hand, her cheeks flushed a ripe cherry red. "Thaddeus, guess what I dreamed about?"
He cleared his throat, leaning in to steal a kiss, only to have her dodge playfully. "I dreamed that my brother and Chasel got married!"
"Oh?" Thaddeus paused, staring at her in bewilderment.
"Our whole family was at their wedding and I caught the bouquet Chasel threw!"
Thaddeus remained silent, unsure of how to respond.
"And just as they were about to kiss, I woke up! Ugh, why did I have to wake up at the most crucial moment?" Evadne pouted, her fingers working through her hair in frustration, her heart still racing.
"You're too adorable, Evadne," Thaddeus chuckled, as he sat on the bed and gently pulled her close, tapping her forehead lightly. "What goes on in your head every day?"
"I was so tired when we got back, I fell asleep the moment I closed my eyes. But I had so much I wanted to tell you."
She swallowed nervously, fixating on his eyes. "I have this feeling, like Chasel might actually like my brother. And my brother doesn’t seem to push Chasel away."
Thaddeus didn't dismiss her words as mere post-sleep ramblings. Instead, he pondered them seriously.
"I know about Dr. Bright's sexual orientation, but Cassius is different."
"That's true. Maybe I'm just being silly, but that dream felt so real," Evadne sighed, taking a deep breath. "I've always thought my brother was the best man in our family, that no woman was good enough for him. Not that those girls weren't nice, but something was always missing. Yet, that perfect sense of compatibility, I felt it with Chasel. It's unbelievable."
"Evadne, even if that's the case, would you be unable to accept it?"
Evadne shook her head vehemently. "I'm more worried about how Emeric would take it. My brother claims his faith is why he's not married with children. Emeric has reluctantly accepted that. But if my brother actually prefers men, Ah, I'm overthinking this. Even if it’s true, Emeric has slowly come to accept you, what's there left to not accept?"
Thaddeus was torn between laughter and concern.
Just then, the concerned voice of Alva echoed from outside the door.
"Mr. Abernathy, Mrs. Abernathy, are you both awake? Come down for a bite to eat before you go back to sleep. How can you rest well on an empty stomach?"
Thaddeus wore an expression of pure sheepishness, while Evadne clutched the sheets to her chest in embarrassment.
He was all the more vigorous when he was hungry, devouring his wife whole, taking her in completely.
After freshening up and changing clothes, Evadne and Thaddeus descended to the dining room.
It had been a while since Evadne had tasted Alva's cooking, and she devoured the meal with gusto. Alva watched her with affection, as if she were her own long-lost daughter.
