His Ex-Wife Is A Billionaire (Evadne and Thaddeus) novel Chapter 541

Thad's large hand paused in the middle of brushing through Evadne's flowing locks as his eyes darted to the phone screen.

"Evie, do you recognize this number?" he asked, his brows knitting together.

"No clue."

"Should we answer it then?" His deep voice was light.

Evadne rarely took calls from unknown numbers, and it was even rarer for her to receive them.

Yet, this time, her heart thrummed with a peculiar anticipation, as if ignoring this call might make her miss out on the jackpot.

"Hello?" Evadne said warmly as she picked up the call.

"Uh, hi."

On the other end, a timid, soft, and gentle voice came through, reminiscent of her baby sister.

After locking her eyes with Thad, Evadne pressed the speaker button, and immediately hit record, "May I ask who is this?"

"Is this Evadne speaking?" the girl whispered.

"Yes, I'm Evadne."

"It’s Beverly."

The couple tensed. Evadne felt her heart pounding, and her fingertips trembling with sweat.

Locking his intense gaze on his lady, Thad held his breath as he took her delicate hand and placed it over his heart, offering her a sense of calm that only he could provide.

"Beverly, you finally called," Evadne's voice was soft and warm, deliberately avoiding formalities to bridge their distance. "I've been waiting for your call every single day, and finally, it's here."

Thad's eyes narrowed in disbelief at her excited expression.

She said she had been waiting for Beverly's call, implying that she had expected to hear from her, but when had they ever connected? How come he hadn't noticed?

"You've been waiting for me?"

Beverly fell silent for a while, before she continued with a frail voice, "Ms. Evadne, if I never reached out to you."

"Then I would still wait. The choice to contact me is yours, but the decision to wait is mine," Evadne declared, her words saturated with resolve.

Silence stretched on the other end of the line.

But Evadne offered patience, content to wait in silence.

Sometimes Thad admired her ability to endure for the sake of her goals. She didn't flaunt her privileged background or act superior.

He could only muster this amount of patience for her, he mused.

"Ms. Evadne, I'm calling to tell you I'm willing to testify against Byron as a witness to his assault!" Beverly's voice cracked, her words heavy with suppressed anger and pain.

Thad's heart raced, his chiseled jaw tightened with intensity.

A flood of emotions surged within Evadne, and she struggled to hold back tears while whispering, "Okay, if you're willing. I, along with Mr. Thaddeus from Abernathy Corporation, will support you all the way."

His heart felt the impact; it was a fierce contraction, a reminder of his own rough upbringing and fractured family that made it hard for him to empathize with anyone other than his loved ones.

Yet now, wasn't this feeling of bitter he was experiencing exactly empathy?

"I'm under strict watch by my mom, so I hardly have a moment to myself. But I can try to slip out while she's asleep."

"Beverly, Thad and I will come by your place to pick you up tonight, don't worry, we'll be discreet," Evadne assured her, her heart racing with determination.

"It's not about being caught; it's the only chance I have to get out," Beverly sighed.

"We're coming for your safety," Thad said, his voice low and serious. "It's likely that the Chambers Group is watching you. If they find you leave carelessly, it could be dangerous for you."

Beverly gasped, "Ms. Evadne."

"Don't be scared, Beverly. Thad is here with me," Evadne said, while lifting her beautiful face and raising her hand gently.

Thad leaned in, like a knight bowing to his queen, bringing his handsome face to hers so close that their noses nearly touched.

Evadne blinked her sparkling eyes in surprise.

And in that moment, he kissed her soft lips.

He playfully teased her with his tongue, which stirred a whirl of emotions in her, before he suddenly pulled away.

Oh, the scoundrel, getting worse by the day!

"Mr. Thaddeus?! That's really Mr. Thaddeus?!"

Beverly's mood lifted with excitement, "Mr. Thaddeus! I admire you so much! You're my idol!"

When night finally fell, Evadne and Thad, with only Gordon in tow, arrived once again at the base of Beverly's apartment building.

The couple sat in the car while Gordon stood vigilant by the door, scanning for the girl's arrival.

Soon enough, a figure in a simple T-shirt and jeans emerged from the dark wooden doorway.

Thad and Evadne, watching from the car, could finally breathe easy when they saw Beverly. They'd loved to greet her in person, but if standing out there, the three of them would be too conspicuous.

"Are you Ms. Higgins?" Gordon asked, discreetly studying the fresh-faced girl before him.

Alas. The poor girl looked so pale and pretty; no wonder Byron had set his sights on her. A fine young woman wasted on a brute!

But she did seem a bit more mature than her age of seventeen.

"Yes. I'm Beverly," she said, her big eyes timidly fixed on the man in the sharp suit—his look was out of place in the shabby neighborhood.

Feeling outclassed, she pursed her lips and took a small step back.

Wearing a warm smile, Gordon made a welcoming gesture, "Mr. Thad and his wife are waiting for you. Please, come with me."

"Wife?"

"That's Ms. Evadne."

The thought of meeting her idols sent stars into Beverly's eyes as she followed Gordon to the sleek black sedan.

Gordon noticed the girl had a white cartoon plush backpack that looked part bunny and part bear—awkwardly adorable.

"That's cute."

"Oh? Thank you."

Gordon paused, "I meant your bag; it's really cute."

Flushing with embarrassment, Beverly stammered her thanks, mistakenly addressing him as an elder.

Was he really that old-looking?

Gordon's vision darkened for a moment, but he brushed it off without a word.

The black car slipped away into the night, while a sneaky shadow emerged from around the corner of the old complex, watching their departure and pulling out a phone.
