Before leaving, Beverly slipped back into her everyday clothes, intending to return the Cinderella-like gown to Evadne.
However, Evadne adamantly refused to take it back, insisting it was a gift and should be considered a belated present for her 18th birthday.
With no good reason to refuse, Beverly carefully carried Evadne's gift home, her eyes brimming with tears.
On the ride back, Gordon, conscious of the chauffeur driving, sat stiffly and did not dare to speak a word. He feared any misunderstanding that he was some creepy older man abducting a young girl, which would have been mortifying if someone decided to take action right there and then.
Beverly kept her distance from Gordon the entire trip, facing the window with a delicate blush spreading across her cheeks. She touched her face stealthily, feeling the warmth.
Upon reaching her apartment complex, Beverly intended to let Gordon go straight home. But Gordon, concerned for her safety, insisted on escorting her upstairs, only resting easy after she entered her home.
At the Higgins' doorstep, Beverly hesitated, then softly said, “Mr. Gordon, I need to pop into my place for a moment. Can you wait for me, please?”
“Of course, take your time. I’ll wait as long as it takes!” replied Gordon, his face betraying how little he valued his own time in his eagerness to oblige.
Back in college, he was the student body president on full scholarship. After graduation, he had cut his teeth working for Thaddeus and had become the chief secretary to the president, earning a handsome salary.
Yet, when he saw the girl he liked, his intelligence seemed to regress, and he became as daft as a love-struck duck.
Shortly, Beverly emerged tiptoeing with a pink bag, careful not to wake her mother, gently closing the door behind her.
“This is for you, Mr. Gordon. The little pouch you asked me to make last time. I’m sorry, with everything that’s been happening lately, I’ve only just finished it.”
Beverly handed over the bag, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “I made some improvements. I hope your sister likes it.”
“She’ll love it! Thank you, Ms. Higgins!”
Gordon’s hands trembled as he took the bag. Their fingers brushed inadvertently, sending a thrill through them both.
“Ms. Higgins, Beverly, I really like you. May I court you?” Gordon, buoyed by the courage that often comes with a few drinks, decided to try his luck once more.
Beverly stepped back, flustered, “I can't. I haven’t even graduated yet! I don’t want to date, I need to focus on my studies!”
“I’ll wait for you! I'll wait until you graduate, even if you won't think about it until college, I’ll still wait!” Gordon’s voice was hoarse with earnest desire.
Her face aflame, Beverly shook her head emphatically, “But, but I’m not of age yet!”
“Didn’t you just celebrate your eighteenth birthday?”
Beverly bit her lip.
“Beverly, I...”
