Arnold and Bennett excused themselves and closed the door behind them, providing space for the conversation between Evadne and Chasel.
"Chasel." Evadne whispered his name.
In that moment, words failed her. Whether it was offering comfort or discussing her elder brother, nothing seemed appropriate.
A few seconds of silence passed between them, feeling like an eternity.
"Evadne. I'm so sorry." Chasel couldn't lift his gaze, droplets of sweat streaming down his chiseled cheeks.
Evadne shook her head, her voice a soft caress, "Chasel, you are not to blame for any of this. There's no need for apologies. Liking someone isn't a crime, not in the least."
"It is my fault, all of it."
Chasel's head remained bowed, like a sinner scorned by thousands, his usual confidence washed away. "Suri was right; I ruined Cassius. If only I had listened to her, none of this would have happened. Evadne, I'm unforgivable. I've been selfish. But I wish I could be the only one to pay the price. I'd take any suffering, any punishment. I don't want Cassius to suffer. I wish we could go back to the start. But it seems too late now."
Pain pricked Evadne's heart; her voice caught in her throat.
Putting aside whether her brother was truly ruined or not, Chasel was crumbling to ruins.
"Just now, I reached out to my closest senior back home, who is also a renowned expert in neurology. He's meticulous in his work and a person of great integrity. For Chairman Emeric’s illness, you can seek his help in the future. His expertise is no less than mine."
Evadne's eyes narrowed, her throat tightening, "And what about you, Chasel? What will you do?"
"I'm going back home."
Chasel said with a bitter smile. "This time, I probably won’t come back."
"How can that be! You can’t just leave like this. What about my brother?"
Evadne's voice rose in anxiety as she grabbed his arm. "You care about my brother so much, don’t you know how much you mean to him? Remember his first reaction when your relationship was exposed? He took all the blame himself, terrified that you might be criticized or bullied. Even at the expense of his own reputation, he is determined to protect you!"
Chasel slowly raised his head, his eyes meeting Evadne's. A pain so deep that it felt bone-marrow deep stirred a tempest in his heart.
