"Jareth Fairhaven!!!"
Edith, with dirt-stained hands, clutched at the man's pant leg, her eyes red with a ghostly malice, filled with venom, "For that bitch, you treated me like this? Marilla, what is she? I am your own flesh and blood, Jareth! How could you do this to me! You'll die in your boots!"
"Yeah, you are my flesh and blood."
Jareth's voice was a low rumble, as though blending into the dimness around them, his eyes narrow slits of frost, shimmering with unshed tears, "My own sister, spoiled by me since childhood, yet you've stabbed me in the heart time and again for your own selfish desires, tearing apart my happiness with your own hands. If your hatred was directed at me, if I was the only victim, perhaps I could've found it in my heart to forgive you because of our blood ties.
But you've harmed an innocent girl, and that girl happens to be the love of my life. Edith, I've given you too many chances. Each time, I clung to a sliver of hope that you might change your ways.
Yet, I overestimated your conscience. Each time I showed you mercy, you repaid me by inflicting even more sinister harm on Marilla."
His eyes closed, the redness vanishing. In his mind's eye, he saw again Marilla fighting back against those brutes.
What if she hadn't had the strength to resist, what if she hadn't gambled with her life? The dire state Edith was in now would've been Marilla's fate, even worse, it would've meant losing his beloved forever.
"Jareth, stop trying to justify your betrayal and disloyalty with excuses!" Edith's breaths were ragged, her gaze fixed on him with fury, "That foolish girl has devoured your heart and soul! You're a madman now, a rabid dog under her spell! The biggest regret of my life is being your sister! And not killing that little harlot when I had the chance, making you weep for a lifetime, living with regret for a lifetime!"
Jareth half-closed his eyes, looking down at her calmly. Watching her scream furiously, her contorted face turning into a monstrous visage.
"You think locking me up here will avenge that slut? Ha, the police will find me soon enough from under your nose! And Grandpa, Mom, they'll come looking for me. Jareth, you're done for! You're so damn done!"
"Grandpa's dead," Jareth, usually so composed, choked on his words as he delivered the news.
Edith's face turned ashen as plaster, her eyes hollow, "What are you saying? Grandpa is dead?"
Then she burst into uncontrollable laughter, "Hahaha, Jareth, you’re lying, making up such lies to mess with me!"
"Is it necessary?"
Jareth's eyes, heavy with pain, sank into the shadows, "The day after tomorrow is Grandpa's funeral. Sadly, you won't have the chance to see him one last time."
Edith's pupils contracted, panic setting in, "How could this happen?"
"Gary killed him; stabbed him three times."
Despair clouded Edith's vision, her heart spasming in terror, "No."
"You've sided with evil, tried to use Gary to strike at me and eliminate Marilla. But in the end, Gary killed the one person in this house who loved you the most. And Dad, he was also killed by him. Back then, the helicopter crash at sea was his doing."
Edith was stunned, her entire world seemingly collapsing around her.
"I told you more than once to stay away from Gary, that he might be the one who killed our dad. But you insisted on making a pact with the tiger. Your actions, undoubtedly, made you Gary's accomplice."
Jareth suppressed the agony of losing his family, his voice a deep, gravelly echo, "He could kill his own dad without a second thought; do you really think you could survive under his thumb? You followed his orders, kidnapped Marilla, not knowing that a quarrel would benefit the third party. He had set up cameras, capturing your vile actions, and exposed them online. You are nothing more than a pawn he used and after that, discarded at will."
As Edith was overwhelmed by the soul-crushing truth, her laughter turned hysterical, her gaze manic, "I was fooled by Gary? Haha. What a joke! I'm not a pawn; he is!
Jareth, you're so desperate to manipulate me with morality! Do you think by saying this, I'll buy it and feel guilty towards you? Don't think you can stand on a moral high ground and punish me. I won't fall for that!"
Jareth still remained impassive, "I'm giving you one last chance. Apologize to Marilla right now, in front of me. I'll be lenient with you."
"Dream on! I'd rather die than bow to that bitch!" Edith spat viciously, defiant as ever.
"Dean."
Dean, who had been waiting outside, stepped forward, "Yes, Mr. Fairhaven."
