Chapter 100: Unexpected Helper
JULIA
The sound of Andy’s heavy breathing filled the car, making me feel worse with every second passing.
We were in the back seat now, his small body curled and his face flushed and damp with sweat.
I placed my hand over his forehead and worriedly looked at Sarah.
“His fever’s getting worse, Sarah,” I said, my voice trembling. “We need to get him to the hospital now.”
“I know, I know,” she muttered, her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly.
To add to that, the beautiful sun that graced our day was now nowhere in sight. Instead, the rain came down in sheets, and Sarah’s windshield wipers were struggling to keep up.
“Please drive safely, though,” I quickly added.
“No worries,” Sarah said, still focused. Her voice trembled, too, so I knew she was also worried.
When we finally pulled up to the emergency room, I quickly went out while Sarah parked the car.
I scooped Andy into my arms, his body burning against mine, and rushed through the sliding doors.
What greeted me was chaos. People crowded in the waiting area, and the sound of both children and adults filled the room. There were too many patients.
The reception desk was swarmed, and no one seemed to notice me standing there, my son shivering in my arms.
“Please,” I called out, my voice breaking. “My son–he’s really sick. He needs help!”
No one looked up. In the sea of patients, my voice was drowned out.
Panic clawed at my throat as I glanced down at Andy. His eyes were half–closed, his lips moving faintly.
Sarah was beside me in an instant, her hand on my shoulder. She was a bit wet from the rain and equally worried.
She clicked her tongue. “Alright, cover your cars,” she said, preparing to shout.
However, just as she was about to scream, a familiar voice cut through the noise.
“Julia?”
I froze.
I turned slowly, my heart pounding, and saw Dean standing a few feet away from us. I wouldn’t have liked seeing him in any other circumstance; however, at this moment, I felt relieved.
He stepped forward, his gaze going to Andy. “What’s wrong with him?”
“He–he has a high fever,” I stammered, clutching Andy tighter. “He’s been shivering, and he’s barely responsive. I don’t know what’s wrong.”
Dean’s expression softened, but there was something in his eyes that still made me feel queasy. “Bring him this way,” he said, gesturing down the hall. “I’ll take care of him.”
Sarah, too, appeared like she wanted to intervene. But then, she nodded.
“I’m here,” she said. “I’ve never liked this guy, but he’s the one who could help us now.”

That was trie.
The last thing I wanted was to be indebted to Dean, of all people. But Andy’s weak whimper snapped me out of my thoughts.
Dean led us to a small bed where he quickly hooked Andy up to a monitor and began checking his vitals. A nurse also entered, ready to assist in the procedures.
“It looks like a fever due to an infection,” Dean said after a moment. “It’s a good thing you came here, though. He might have a seizure with such a high temperature. I’ll order some labs and get him started on antibiotics. Then, he’ll be fine.”
I nodded, relief and unease warring inside me. “Thank you, I quietly said.
Dean’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Of course. Anything for you, Julia.”
Sarah’s hand tightened on my arm.
“Let me just write the orders, and I’ll be right back. The nurses will help you in the meantime.”
I nodded once more.
As
…on as he was gone, Sarah let out a deep breath. “Dang, that guy is still weird,” she muttered before speaking
to Andy, who already seemed better after the nurse hooked him to an IV.
While Sarah was busy talking to him, I pulled out my phone and dialed Evan, my hands shaking as I explained the
situation.
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Evan said. “Just stay with him, Julia. I’m on my way.”
I hung up and sank into the chair beside Andy’s bed, my legs feeling like they might give out at any moment.
Sarah stayed close, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that had settled in my chest
After a while, 1 excused myself to the restroom, needing a moment to collect myself. I splashed cold water on my face, staring at my reflection in the mirror.
I was just about to leave when the door swung open, and Dean stepped inside.
My breath caught in my throat as he closed the door behind him, his eyes locking onto mine..
“Julia,” he said. “We need to talk.”
I took a step back, my heart racing. “Dean, this isn’t the time-”
