Chapter 64
Noon sunlight streamed through the cafeteria windows as Lenore and Bonnie grabbed their trays, the scent of the food hanging in the air.
Tara, from her corner table, spotted them and waved. “Save you guys a seat,” she shouted.
Lenore, almost a month into her enrollment, had an intimidating air, but she wasn’t as distant as she seemed. Tara, still a bit wary, found herself less afraid with each passing day.
Lance and Kyle were also at the table, discussing Carlos’s latest antics in their hushed voices.
Lenore had barely settled into her seat when her phone buzzed with a call from Troy.
Nonchalantly, she propped one foot up on the bench and swiped to answer. With her free hand, she picked at her food–a rib to be precise–which she nibbled on with a casual air. “What do you want?”
Troy’s voice was as ominous as a thundercloud. “You took half of the Duncan family’s fortune?”
Lenore confirmed it with a straightforward “Yeah.” Hearing it straight from her mouth hit Troy with a mix of disbelief and shock.
After that day at the Duncan residence, Troy dug into Lenore’s past in Peacefield–skipping school, getting into fights, even a visit to the police station for a ‘friendly chat.
After getting the boot from middle school, she picked up the car repair. Otherwise, she was pretty much a write–off, never straying far from Peacefield.
Yet here she was, with the business titan Lloyd from the Duncan family of Jinslenburg, practically groveling before Lenore. Troy was at a loss.
Troy couldn’t unravel the mystery, but the Duncan family’s fortune could catapult the Smedley family to the top in Jinslenburg.
He pulled himself together, his voice gentler. “Esther’s heading out to Senanville tomorrow to find a mentor. You’re coming home for dinner tonight.”
The implication was clear as day–it was a setup. Lenore, unimpressed, let out a casual “Oh.”
After school, the moment Lenore stepped outside, a driver, sent by someone important, blocked her path with a polite demeanor. “Ms. Smedley, my boss sent for you.”
Bonnie, not recognizing him, clutched Lenore’s arm nervously and whispered, “Who does he work for?”
Lenore let out a dry laugh. “Troy.”
Bonnie thought, Troy’s sending a driver to Lenore? There’s no way he’s being this generous.’
Bonnie wasn’t naive; she quickly pieced things together, and with a hushed tone, she asked, “Lenore, is he trying to butter you up?”
Lenore’s eyes narrowed to slits. “Seems that way.”
‘After all, it’s almost 100 million. How could Troy, as my father, not be tempted? He’s afraid I’ll bolt, so he even sent a driver to corner me, Lenore
thought.
Bonnie’s worry was palpable. “Then you…” Her voice was drowned out by the roar of an approaching sports car.
A slick blue convertible pulled up to the curb, its sleek design turning heads. With his blue hair gleaming under the sun, Wayne slipped off his shades and propped himself against the car door, playfully whistling at the pair.
“Hey, Lenore, check out my new wheels,” he said with a flirtatious grin.
Right behind it was a Porsche Cayenne, its back window down, revealing a man in a black silk shirt–Silas. His handsome features were as cold and untouchable as marble.
Silas glanced at the Smedley family’s driver before his deep gaze settled on Lenore. There was a warm smile in his eyes as he said in a deep voice,
“Get in the car.
No matter Silas’s motives for getting close to her, his timing was always spot on. Lenore, with a slight chill in her eyes, slung an arm around Bonnie’s shoulder and made her way to the Porsche Cayenne car.
The Smedley family’s driver’s face twitched. “Ms. Smedley…
