"Can't you two talk this out? Why all the drama?" Twenty years of strife again reared its ugly head, the same dilemma, but this time, Jennifer decided to protect the baby growing inside Leanne.
"Anne, let's go inside and rest."
She wanted to take Leanne away from the brewing storm, but Leanne said, "This involves my parents. I have no reason to hide and let Curtis face it alone."
She looked at Maddox, her demeanor unyielding. "He's doing this for me. If you're upset, take it out on me."
Maddox remarked, "You two are truly in this together, aren't you?"
"Why yell?" Curtis hugged Leanne. "You're freaking out your grandkid, and Mom ain't gonna be happy about it."
Maddox choked on his words. He thought he'd been speaking calmly, hadn't he?
While realizing the situation, his gaze shifted to Leanne's oversized sweater. Jennifer said, "Leanne is pregnant. Please keep it gentle."
The child they lost years ago remained Jennifer's sorrow, and seeing her grieve was Maddox's burden, too.
"How far along?" Maddox asked.
