Maurice glanced at Jarrod, noticing that he hardly seemed to care about Sylvie’s performance today—he hadn’t even offered her a single word of comfort.
Maurice found this rather interesting. A flicker of amusement crossed his eyes before he finally spoke. “Well, attitude matters more than anything. It’s good you’re able to see it that way.”
Sylvie felt a heaviness in her chest, but she said nothing more.
Her gaze drifted toward Elodie.
As fate would have it, Elodie and her group had to pass by them on their way out.
The moment they walked past, Jarrod lifted his chin, looking lazily at Elodie.
“Congratulations,” he said, offering just that single word.
That was enough to make Sylvie freeze, her composure unraveling in an instant as a silent alarm blared in her mind.
Elodie hadn’t expected Jarrod to address her. She slowed for a brief moment, glancing at him. He was watching her, his face unreadable, but there was a faint, ambiguous smile in his eyes.
Even Alexander looked surprised, shooting a quick look at Sylvie, whose expression had soured visibly.
Elodie didn’t stop, nor did she intend to reply.
Esmeralda, however, grinned and chimed in, “Mr. Silverstein, instead of fussing over your ex-wife, maybe you should cheer up Ms. Fielding. Look at her—lost and disappointed.”
At that, Sylvie’s face grew even darker.
After they left, Sylvie turned to Jarrod, only to find his eyes still following Elodie’s retreating figure.
She clenched her fists suddenly. “Jarrod, could you take me home first?”
He finally looked at her. “I’m not done here yet. I need to meet with a few of the judges. You should head back on your own.”
Sylvie quickly masked her surprise, keeping her composure. “Alright, you take care of your business.”
She didn’t hesitate, walking away briskly, determined not to let anyone see even a hint of her disappointment.
