Stuart burst through the door, startling the man everyone called One-Eye.
One-Eye looked like he'd just realized the gravity of his situation. He quickly raised his hands, shouting, "I didn't do anything! I swear, I didn't touch her! I even gave her some warm water!"
Desperation to survive far outweighed any orders he'd been given.
After bringing Morwenna into the room, it dawned on One-Eye that he had been left out to dry. If he harmed Morwenna, whether or not the kidnapping succeeded, he was the expendable one. But he was terrified; he didn’t want to be abandoned either.
Was it fair that just because he was the ugly one, he’d be the one tossed aside?
So instead of laying a hand on Morwenna, he fed her some warm, sweetened water and carefully adjusted her torn collar. His survival instincts were on overdrive.
He dared not let anyone outside know, so he sat by the bed, making noises to pretend he was doing something to Morwenna.
Seeing Stuart charge in, he surrendered without resistance, his hands held high.
What One-Eye didn’t know was that as the door was kicked open, a sniper far off had him in their sights. His choice to surrender saved his life.
Seeing Morwenna unharmed was a relief to everyone.
Some were nearly moved to tears.
Stuart's eyes glistened.
For days, he had been uncertain if he would ever get out of the wilderness or see Morwenna again. Since learning she was in danger, he had been restless with worry, but now, all his fears were put to rest.
Seeing Morwenna was like reaching the end of a long, arduous journey.
A weight lifted from his heart.
Stuart, feeling as if his feet were made of lead, stepped forward and called softly, "Princess, I'm back."
Morwenna was awake.
Her fainting had been due to exhaustion and hunger, and One-Eye’s accidental gesture of offering her sugar water had revived her.
She looked at Stuart.
