Chapter 5 He Will Never Love Her
"I'll be there soon. Keep the nurse stays with you, okay?" Benjamin's voice was gentle, but his jaw was set tightly. His expression, however, changed to something unreadable after hearing Lauren.
Lauren was thrilled with his response. "Okay, I'll wait for you."
Once the call was over, Benjamin glanced towards the stairs, his face growing serious. He then asked the maid to remind Harper to have her dinner before he left.
Shortly after, the sound of a car engine filled the air, and Harper watched from the master bedroom window as the black car drove away.
Her face was blank, her smile bitter. Her mind was filled with images of Benjamin rushing to Lauren's side with worry.
Harper thought, "He really does love Lauren. So, what am I still holding out for?"
...
Benjamin didn't come back to Pineview Villa that night. Harper knew he must have stayed at the hospital with Lauren.
It was the first time he'd stayed out overnight, except for business trips, since they'd been married.
Harper didn't text or call him; she had learned to be a dignified, graceful, and understanding wife.
Before marrying Benjamin, her biological mother, Jennifer Mitchell, and other Mitchell women had drilled into her how to be a wife who wouldn't bother her husband.
Harper thought, "I've followed their advice, but why doesn't Benjamin show any affection towards me? The only explanation is that he despises me so much that he can't bring himself to like me."
She faced the harsh reality, telling herself, "He doesn't love me, and he never will."
Harper had a restless night and only fell asleep at dawn, but soon after, her phone rang.
It was Benjamin calling.
Harper answered with a slightly hoarse voice, "What's the matter?"
"Are you up?" He asked.
