I Once Married You (Harper and Benjamin) novel Chapter 50

Chapter 50 Disappointment

"Ms. Davis has been found, but she has a high fever from the cold and is still on an IV."

"Okay. Then you'll help keep an eye on things here. Everything will wait until he wakes up."

Harper arranged it briefly and then left the ward.

She actually wanted to go straight to Lauren and ask for clarification, but that thought was immediately drunk out of her.

Benjamin braved the heavy rain in the middle of the night to find Lauren, but Lauren didn't force him with a knife holder around his neck. So, what qualifications did Harper have to question Lauren?

Harper drove straight back to Pineview Villa. She washed up and ate breakfast, then took another shower before going back to her bedroom to sleep.

Inside the hospital, Benjamin woke up close to eight in the morning.

Harper had been gone for over an hour by then.

He opened his eyes to see the woman sitting off to the side with her head propped up and her eyes closed.

Benjamin frowned and looked at Lauren, who was wearing a hospital gown and had a pale face before he remembered what had happened.

The anesthesia had worn off, so the pain from his wounds and broken foot was excruciating.

Benjamin felt pain when he moved even slightly.

With that, Lauren opened her eyes, looked at him on the hospital bed, and said happily, "Benjamin, you're finally awake. Do you feel any discomfort there? I'll go call the doctor over."

"No need." Benjamin frowned in pain, and his face was expressionless. His thin lips didn't have the slightest trace of blood color.

"Benjamin, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I'm the one who got you into this mess."

Lauren blamed herself for the guilt, terrified to learn that Benjamin had been in a car accident trying to find her.

"I don't blame you. How are you doing? Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine, just a little feverish. But the nurse gave me a shot and I'm much better."

Lauren shook her head, and her eyes were swollen from crying. Watching him covered in scars made her even more sad.

Benjamin's expression was warm, with no noticeable ripples. He asked, "Why are you the only one here? Where are the others?"

He helplessly scanned and did not see that familiar figure. His brows furrowed, and his emotions were a bit complicated.

Lauren hurriedly responded, "Curtis went to prepare the change of clothes and toiletries you'll need. He will be back soon."

"I got it."

Benjamin didn't ask anything further.

He just closed his eyes and his injured face looked haggard. Benjamin remembered that he was driving too fast and crashed into a nearby utility bar at one of the intersections in order to avoid a small car that ran a red light.

Lauren watched Benjamin in silence. As he closed his eyes, she didn't dare to disturb him.

Not long afterward, Curtis came by with something.

Curtis asked, "Ms. Davis, is Mr. Martin awake?"

"Well, he just woke up and now he's back to sleep..."

"Curtis." Benjamin's low voice sounded slowly. He said, "Send Lauren to rest. There's nothing more I can do."

"Benjamin, just let me stay and take care of you. I can do it."

Lauren subconsciously refused because she wanted to be by his side to take care of him, to be there for him. After all, Benjamin had gotten hurt because of her.

He didn't budge one bit, just said, "No, Curtis will be here. You're just fine with the fever, so go ahead and rest."

He looked straight at her, not budging in any way. In the end, she could only nod her head in agreement.

Curtis sent Lauren back to her hospital room before he returned. Just as he entered, he heard Benjamin ask, "Where's Harper?"

His tone was cool and his expression bland, but a very obvious displeasure surfaced between his eyebrows.

Curtis hurriedly responded, "You were admitted to the hospital last night, and I contacted Mrs. Martin as soon as I could. Mrs. Martin arrived and stayed until this morning. She stayed with you for the night, and only went back after she was sure you were fine. By now, Mrs. Martin should be home resting."

The coldness in Benjamin's face dissipated a little, but the look was still not quite there.

Curtis asked tentatively, "Mr. Martin, do you want me to call Mrs. Martin?"

"No, let her rest."

Benjamin was aloof and clearly not pleased.
