I Refuse to Divorce novel (Zoe and Mason) novel Chapter 104

You could hear a pin drop in the office. Liam was wearing a gold watch on his lean hands, holding a platinum business card. It had his private number on it.

Zoe took it from him gingerly. She stared at him for some time before asking softly, “Why would you help me, Liam? I thought you’d take Mason’s side.”

He didn’t answer her. Instead, he leaned back on his chair and smoked the cigar wordlessly. Truth be told, he didn’t have a good reason for doing this. If he had to find a reason, then perhaps it was because of what he saw in the hospital that day.

The cuts on her wrists were terrifying to look at and it reminded him so much of the same injuries he had seen on his mother. There was a definite difference between them, though. His mother was determined to die and she had succeeded in her goal.

On the other hand, Zoe was doing everything she could to stay alive. Perhaps that was what triggered his compassion for her.

Zoe was gripping the business card tightly and her palms were sweating when she left Liam’s law firm. She returned to Mason’s side and seemingly got her glorious life back. However, behind closed doors, she was being tortured horribly.

Still, she rarely entertained the thought of leaving him because she didn’t even dare to think of the possibility of it. However, she could now see a glimmer of hope out of the despair that consumed her.

Taking the elevator, she arrived at the ground floor. She accidentally brushed past Cecil when she exited through the revolving door. They could see each other but couldn’t come in contact because of the glass panels that separated them.

They were headed in different directions too. She was getting out of the building while he was going on.

Zoe was still holding Liam’s business card. She knew exactly who Cecil had come here to meet. She knew he loved her, but she had no choice but to let him down.

It wasn’t because she was married to Mason. It was because Cecil had arrived too late. He had never confessed his love to her and she had never rejected him.

The revolving door was still spinning when the light shone on both of them. Zoe flashed him a faint smile. There was a sense of appreciation and a hint of sadness behind it.

If Mason wasn’t around, she could’ve at least called Cecil without any worries, visited his mother, and made some pizza with her. Both of them were warm, loving people!

However, life was always full unmet expectations.
