This was Song Zhenyan’s first time accompanying Shi Nuan out of the house—a trip to the hospital for a checkup, no less—as the latter’s mother-in-law. Unable to put her emotions into words, Song Zhenyan was certainly much more nervous compared to Shi Nuan, who was unfazed.
Yu Qing was already waiting for the duo when they arrived at the hospital. A hint of surprise was evident in her expression when she noticed Shi Nuan walking in with a middle-aged woman. “Mrs. Fu!” she greeted.
Shi Nuan nodded and responded, “Dr. Yu, I’ll be counting on you.”
Yu Qing gave Shi Nuan a smile and turned to look at the woman standing next to the latter, who explained with a smile, “Dr. Yu, this is my mother-in-law.” The doctor nodded in understanding. “Madam, do wait here for a moment. I’ll give Mrs. Fu a checkup inside,” said Yu Qing before leading Shi Nuan into the room for the examination.
As Shi Nuan was already well into her pregnancy for almost five months, her baby bump was clearly showing. Yu Qing examined Shi Nuan for a while and confirmed that all of her vital signs and lab results were normal. “Keep it up! I see that you’re being well taken care of, but remember to walk around more instead of sitting down so often at home!”
“Okay!” Shi Nuan got down from the bed and smiled warmly at her assessing doctor.
“Thank you, Dr. Yu.”
“No problem at all!” Compared to many other pregnant women, Shi Nuan was actually very cooperative. Moreover, her physical condition was quite good, and some of the problems that she had were now being improved upon. The doctor went on, “Remember, the further into your pregnancy you are, the more taxing it’ll be for you. Pregnant women might also feel some mood swings at times, and these are all perfectly normal. You just have to be your usual self and keep an open mind.”
“Okay, I won’t forget it!”
When Song Zhenyan saw Shi Nuan come out of the room with some documents stating the examination results, she hurriedly stood up and inquired, “How is it?”
“Mom, Dr. Yu said that the baby is very healthy, and my vital signs and lab results are all normal, so you don’t have to worry!” answered Shi Nuan as she handed the papers to Song Zhenyan to take a look.
The latter merely smiled and shook her head. “As long as the baby’s healthy, it’s fine! I don’t know how to read any of these anyway. Well, if everything’s all right, shall we head back?”
“Sure!” Shi Nuan was feeling rather tired as well. Thus, she bade Yu Qing goodbye and left the obstetrics and gynecology department.
However, Shi Nuan stopped in her tracks on their way out of the hospital. With an embarrassed expression, she said, “Mom, can you wait here for a minute? I want to go to the restroom.”
“What’s the matter?” Song Zhenyan was stunned for a moment before continuing, “Oh, this is quite common for pregnant ladies; I used to go to the restroom all the time when I was carrying Yan as well. Do you want me to go with you?” Noticing that there was indeed something not quite right with Shi Nuan, she suggested, “Let’s go!”
“It’s all right, Mom. Just wait here for a while. I’ll be right back!” Shi Nuan smiled as she handed the lab report to Song Zhenyan. “There’re some chairs over there. Mom, you can sit over there and give me a minute. I won’t be long!”
After settling Song Zhenyan down, Shi Nuan went to the restroom on the second floor. However, she could sense that there was someone watching her when she approached the entrance of the restroom, but no one could be seen when she turned around.
Shi Nuan could not help but crease her brows. After standing at the entrance for some time and not noticing anyone suspicious, she pushed open the door and entered the restroom.
Suddenly, a shadow loomed over her from behind, and Shi Nuan instantly took a step forward. When she turned around to confront the attacker, she saw Shi Wei holding a handkerchief and rushing toward her. Shi Nuan steadily took a couple of steps back and questioned, “Shi Wei?”
“Shi Nuan, you weren’t expecting me, were you?” Seeing that Shi Nuan actually managed to dodge her twice, Shi Wei stretched out her hand and tightened her grip on the handkerchief. She stared at Shi Nuan begrudgingly, her eyes as vicious as a viper’s. A shiver went down Shi Nuan’s spine in spite of herself. With a deep frown, she asked, “Shi Wei, have you been in hiding during this period of time so that the police can’t find you?”
“That’s right. You don’t seem too surprised to see me,” responded Shi Wei as she eyed her sister coldly. “Shi Nuan, it’s all because of you! If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have ended up where I am right now!”
“Were you the one who killed Su Su?” Shi Nuan naturally saw the handkerchief in the hand of Shi Wei, who was planning to use it to cover the former’s nose and mouth. Thus, Shi Nuan arrived at a conclusion.
As her sharp eyes raked over Shi Wei, Shi Nuan used both her hands behind her back to speedily find her phone in her purse and, to the best of her recollection, press a certain series of buttons. While doing so, her icy gaze met Shi Wei’s. Shi Nuan inquired, “Was it also you who caused Grandfather’s death?”
“So what if it was me?”
“Grandfather was your family, and Su Su was your best friend! Shi Wei, how could you do this to them?”
