S3–Chapter 43
Manuela’s POV
I woke up very early with my phone ringing. I remembered that I had forgotten to turn off the device, and since my mother had my number, I knew it was her calling before I even looked at the screen.
“Hi, Mom,” I answered sleepily. “Good morning!”
“What good morning? It’s six in the morning, are you sleeping in now? What other bad habits have you picked up there that I’ll have to correct?” She was already at full steam and had plenty of anger to unleash on me.
“Mom, I start work at nine, and my workplace is really close by. I don’t need to wake up that early,” I explained.
“So what? I taught you to wake up at five every morning, that’s what a woman has to do, so breakfast is on the table when her husband wakes up.”
“Mom…”
“Don’t ‘Mom‘ me, Manuela. I already told you I’m bringing you back, and your marriage is almost arranged with Calvin’s son.”
“You better undo that arrangement or whatever you call it. I’m not coming back, and I’m not marrying Calvin’s son. I’ve already told you this.”
“You’ll do as I say, young lady.” She spoke with such certainty, but I was no longer willing to give in to everything just to please
her.
“Mom, what do you want? Besides threatening me with marriage.” I decided to be firm and take control.
“It’s not a threat, Manuela. I’m going to get you married, and quickly too. I should have done this long ago. Especially now that I found out you were here in town secretly and didn’t even come home.”
“Mom, I stayed at my brother’s house, and I didn’t come to see you because I heard you built a cell to lock me up.” I looked to the side and saw Flavian awake, watching me with a furious look.
“And I will. Either you come willingly, or I’ll come get you and lock you up here until you’re married. And I’ll tell your husband to keep you well locked up.” She spoke as if this possibility brought her joy.
“Mom, you can’t lock me up or force me to marry…” I was crying without even realizing it, but then I felt the phone being taken from my hand.
“Good morning, ma’am. This is Flavian, Manuela’s boyfriend.” He put the phone on speaker and spoke with that deep, authoritative voice. My mother was really going to kill me.
“Of course this shameless girl is jumping into men’s beds there, behaving like the whore of Babylon…” My mother huffed, but
Flavian cut her off.
“You’re very mistaken, but think what you want. I’m just warning you that I’m losing my patience. Manuela is my girlfriend. She won’t marry whoever’s son because you want her to. And don’t you dare lay a hand on her to force her into anything.” Flavian’s voice sounded dangerous and deadly.
“Who do you think you are, you little gigolo? Don’t interfere in my conversation with my daughter! I’m going to drag this lost girl back home, and I’d like to see you stop me.”
“Try it, and you’ll find out it’s not good to have me as an enemy. I already said, I won’t allow you to lay a finger on Manuela.”
I listened to that dialogue terrified. My mother was perfectly capable of dragging me by my hair. And since she discovered I was sleeping with my boyfriend, things would get even worse.
“You don’t know what I’m capable of, boy!” my mother threatened, and the hatred in her voice was real.
“I’m not a boy! And I doubt you could be worse than me. But if you want to challenge me, don’t complain later!” Flavian’s voice

made it clear he wasn’t joking, nor were these empty threats. He would face her to defend me, I had no doubts.
My mother hung up the phone, and my face was bathed in tears. Flavian tossed his phone aside and pulled me onto his lap.
“Little one, don’t cry!” he said, running his hand through my hair
“She hates me, Flavian. And now that she knows I’m sleeping with you, she’s going to freak out and destroy me.” I was foreseeing the apocalypse.
“Manu, I won’t stand by with my arms crossed while your mother mistreats you or tries to marry you off to someone else,” he said seriously. “You’re mine, little one, and you’ll only leave me if you want to, but as long as you want to stay with me, I won’t let anyone separate us.”
