Flavian’s POV

I slammed the door after loading the luggage into the patrol car and headed to the airport. Bonfim beside me found it all amusing while I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Sabrina was huffing and grumbling in the back seat.
“Flavian, this is outrageous!” Sabrina wouldn’t stop complaining, fidgeting from side to side in the seat – it was irritating
“Miss, you might want to stop squirming so much on that seat. Las night this car transported a fugitive who had been hiding in the bushes, and we haven’t had time to clean it yet. He was in quite an unpleasant state,” Bonfim said, and I glanced at him, knowing he was making up the story to mess with Sabrina.
“Oh, was this the car that transported Remela?” I asked, making up a random name and playing along with Bonfim. This would be fun.
“Yes, it was. He hadn’t showered for a month, hiding in the bushes, digging through garbage. I heard they had to shave his head and make him remove all his body hair,” Bonfim said, and I could see Sabrina looking horrified in the rearview mirror.
“Why would they do that?” I asked, already knowing what Bonfim would make up.
“Lice! He was covered in lice!” Bonfim said casually, and Sabrina had a fit.
“For God’s sake, Flavian, get me out of here! I don’t want to get lice, Flavian! How could you do this to me? Stop this thing and let me out!” Sabrina was panicking.
“Look miss, I’m sorry I forgot to tell Moreno. I just remembered now. So don’t move around too much, you have long hair, and they say lice love long hair,” Bonfim found his path to entertainment and wouldn’t stop.
I wanted to stop the patrol car and start laughing, but I couldn’t. I went along with Bonfim’s lie and let him put on his show. It was hilarious. When we arrived at the airport and I opened the door, Sabrina jumped out of the car, frantically running her hands all over her body as if trying to shake off non–existent lice. The scene was absolutely comical. I took her bags and placed them on a cart for her. But Bonfim wasn’t done yet.
“Listen, I’m going to speak quietly because if anyone hears this, your bags will have to be burned. When you get home, don’t take them inside. Send them straight to be washed and disinfected,” Bonfim spoke in a hushed voice.
“But why, sir?” Sabrina’s eyes were welling up with tears.
“Because Remela had three dogs that were transported in the holding cell, and they had fleas. You know, fleas can linger in the environment and might have gotten into your bags. Send everything to the cleaners and ask them to disinfect it all,” Bonfim warned, and Sabrina’s eyes grew wide.
“Fleas? You transport animals in there? Not just people?” Sabrina was on the verge of panic:
“No, sweetie, sometimes we need to transport animals to shelters, which is what happened with Remela‘ dogs. And well, if Remela had poor hygiene, imagine the condition those poor animals were in,” Bonfim was acting like a Good Samaritan, but he was just collecting another story to tell.
Sabrina was distraught with fear of lice, scabies, and fleas – she was already scratching herself out of sheer panic. Before boarding, she tried to approach me, but I stepped back.
“Sabrina, better not touch anyone, remember the lice- it’s highly contagious,” I said, maintaining my serious tone, and sh made a crying face while scratching her head.
She looked defeated, worn out, and discouraged. She wasn’t anything like the Sabrina who had walked into the police station full of herself and kept complaining in the patrol car all the way to the hotel. I have to admit, Bonfim outdid himself this time.
“One month, Flavian. That’s all I’m giving you. In one month, I’ll be back,” Sabrina said at the airport before turning to board her flight to Bellwood. I didn’t even respond.
“Don’t forget to see a doctor for the medication, sweetie, because of the, you know…” Bonfim made a scratching gesture at his

kept watching her enter the boarding corridor, determined to keep my eyes fixed there until I was certain that plane had taken off with her on it.
