"Yes, he indeed has that plan," Drake replied. He knew his words might sound cruel to Scarlet's ears, but he was telling the truth.
Lenny and Scarlet had just divorced, but he was already going to marry someone else. It must hurt her to a certain extent.
Hearing this, Scarlet clenched her fists, but she schooled her features into neutrality. "Very well. Go ahead with your work, Mr. Cooper. I'm sorry for the trouble I caused you today."
"It's all right, Miss Brown. I'll take my leave now."
As soon as Drake left, Scarlet became a little flustered.
She wasn't in love with Lenny. The two of them had no feelings for each other, and there was no need for her to be sad. What she cared most about right now was her baby.
She was afraid that Lenny would find out about her pregnancy and that she wouldn't be able to keep the child.
He was always cautious but decisive. If he really wanted to marry someone, then no one would be able to stop him.
Scarlet could tell that he cared about that girl very much. So she wouldn't disturb their lives anymore. She had asked for Lenny's help earlier only because things had gotten way out of hand.
After Kyra and Colleen's confrontation with Lenny, Scarlet believed that the Brown family wouldn't make things difficult for her moving forward. She would be able to build a new life for herself and for her baby, and Lenny would be kept out of it.
Scarlet then underwent a thorough prenatal examination, and the doctor found the fetus to be very healthy. The doctor also told her that after some time, she could get a sonogram so that she could see what the baby looked like.
Standing at the gate of the hospital, she couldn't help touching her lower abdomen.
"Don't worry. We will be a family, you and I, and we will always have each other. I will try my best to protect you. Just like how your grandmother tried her best to protect me."
Her face broke into a gentle smile as she finally calmed down from all the panic and chaos.
She had experienced too much in just one day. But it didn't matter. She would stride forward and not shrink back from difficulties.
Scarlet decided to put school on the back burner and deal with the money and assets she had acquired from the divorce. She moved into the apartment that she got and rented out the shop. After getting herself settled, she deposited her remaining money in the bank so that it could earn interest.
She was kind of rich now.
She was very satisfied with how things turned out. She just took the money and the assets as Lenny's child support payment.
One day, at dusk, a car stopped in front of her.
"Ma'am, Mrs. Foster wants to see you."
Scarlet knew the old man in front of her. His name was Hamlin Carson. He was the butler working in the Foster family's old mansion.
Lenny's grandmother, Marlene Foster, brought him with her when she married into the Foster family many years ago. Hamlin was older than Marlene, and although he was her butler, she always showed him respect.
"Mr. Carson," Scarlet muttered, feeling a little nervous. She knew that there was no way she or Lenny could hide their divorce from Marlene.
"Get in the car, please. Mrs. Foster misses you," Hamlin insisted with a smile.
Scarlet got in the car and was nervous the entire trip to the mansion.
When Scarlet's mother was pregnant with her brother, she risked her life to save Marlene.
In the process, Scarlet's mother lost a massive amount of blood and almost lost her baby.
She almost died trying to save Marlene, which greatly touched the old woman. Since then, Marlene had taken good care of Scarlet's mother.
Later, Marlene fell ill and spent a few years abroad for treatment.
During those years, Nolan, Scarlet's father, revealed his true colors and brought home his mistress and illegitimate daughter. Shortly after that, Scarlet's little brother mysteriously disappeared.
The consecutive blows of tragedy made Scarlet's mother collapse.
Marlene was very angry when she returned home. She wanted to teach Nolan a lesson, but Scarlet's mother implored her to leave Nolan alone.
Accoding to Scarlet's mother, there was no point in teaching Nolan a lesson since things had come to this point. After all, she already divorced him, her son remained missing, and her health continued to decline.
Scarlet's grandfather had taken painstaking efforts to build up his company which was now the Brown Group.
If the Brown Group ended up in ruin, then all his efforts would be in vain.
In the end, Scarlet's mother decided to let it go. She was less than forty years old when she passed away.
Before she died, she reunited with Marlene and asked her to take care of Scarlet.
For the sake of Scarlet's mother, Marlene had been taking good care of Scarlet since she married Lenny. Scarlet was deeply indebted to the old lady.
Scarlet had never felt any familial affection in the Brown family, but Marlene showered her with love and care like she was her own flesh and blood.
Soon, the driver pulled over.
As soon as Scarlet entered the house, she heard Marlene coughing, which made her heart ache.
The old lady was sitting on an armchair and watching TV.
"You are here, my dear Scarlet. It is so nice to see you."
The old lady waved at her.
