The reason why Lenny married Scarlet was that he didn't want his mother to be torn between him and his grandmother.
So, for the sake of his mother, he agreed to the arranged marriage. Since then, the relationship between his mother and grandmother had become more amicable.
But now, his grandmother's health had been steadily declining, and she no longer had enough energy to make things difficult for his mother. What was more, Lenny wanted to find the girl that saved him that night and marry her. For him to be able to do that, he'd have to cut ties with Scarlet.
Scarlet was still young and still attending school. Their marriage had been carefully kept under wraps, so it had no impact on her life.
After the divorce, she would get a lot of money, which would enable her to live a carefree life.
Besides, she didn't like him either.
This was only the second time that they had seen each other. How was it possible for someone to fall in love with another after only meeting them twice?
Hearing Lenny's answer, Scarlet felt distressed for reasons she didn't even want to ponder.
It turned out that he had already fallen in love with someone else. If that was the case, then she didn't have to tell him the truth about that night. Otherwise, she would only make him feel uncomfortable.
Besides, wasn't this what she wanted to begin with? Didn't she go abroad to gather evidence of his cheating so that she could finally leave him? Now things worked out the way she wanted.
"Okay. I'll sign the papers." Scarlet spoke without hesitation.
Lenny was kind enough to her. Moreover, what happened that night wasn't his fault. He was clearly under the influence of something, maybe alcohol or drugs. He wasn't himself. Maybe he was even remorseful of what he'd done. Scarlet picked up the pen and signed her name.
"Thank you."
Lenny thanked her for not making trouble for him. It was a peaceful break-up.
After dinner, Lenny left. He didn't plan to stay in the villa for the night.
After he left, Scarlet started packing up her things. The next day, Lenny sent a car to pick her up.
She looked back at the villa where she had lived for a year.
The place had stayed the same. She was leaving it in the same condition she'd first seen it in, as if she had never been there at all.
The only thing that had changed was that she was now a divorced woman.
After she and Lenny got divorced, Scarlet still felt as if she was in a trance.
Lenny's as
sistant pulled over in front of her.
Lenny rolled down his window, looked at her, and said calmly, "Let me give you a ride."
"No, thanks. I'll take a cab home. Thank you for taking care of me this past year," Scarlet replied, curling her lips into a sincere smile.
So what if they'd slept together for one night? Lenny had already given her a huge amount of money as compensation.
Without forcing her, Lenny just nodded and then told his assistant to drive.
Scarlet stood at the gates of the court and tried to hail a taxi from there.
Although it was autumn now, the weather was still very hot. It was just past ten o'clock in the morning, but the sun was already so scorching that people could hardly open their eyes.
The location of the court was a little remote, so it was difficult to get a taxi from there.
Scarlet had started sweating all over because of the heat, and before long, she'd begun feeling a little dizzy. Everything in front of her slowly blurred. Then, she blacked out and collapsed. When she woke up again, she found herself lying in a hospital bed. Somebody had been kind enough to have her rushed to the hospital.
"What... What's wrong with me?" she asked a nurse.
"You suffered a heatstroke. Fortunately, you were attended to in time. You're pregnant. You should pay more attention to your health. But your baby is very healthy. You can leave here after getting some rest."
"What? What did you just say?"
Grabbing the nurse's hand, Scarlet felt her heart race.
"I said you got heatstroke."
"No, not that. Did you say I was pregnant? What do you mean?"
"Well, don't you know you're pregnant? You're three months along. I mean, you should've known that by now."
Scarlet was flabbergasted. The news came like a bolt from the blue.
Her period had always been irregular. Sometimes, she wouldn't even get her period for months, so when her period stopped coming, she didn't think much of it at all.
Besides, she took a morning-after pill after she slept with Lenny. There was no way she could get pregnant.
"It's impossible. I can't be pregnant. I have taken a contraceptive pill."
"Birth control pills aren't always one hundred percent effective. There's still a three-percent chance of conception. All contraceptive methods have a slim chance of failing. There's no guarantee that they'll succeed all the time," the nurse explained.
Upon hearing what the nurse said, Scarlet felt dizzy again and then fainted.
